I have no idea what to do next?
« on: Saturday 21 June 08 12:45 BST (UK) »
This is a general question really.  I live in England and have just discovered that my 2 x Great Grandfather was born in Ireland.  I have no information about where in Ireland - just Ireland in 1848.  His name was William Lowry and his parents John Lowry and Mary Gibson.

All the resources I have found online basically need you to know where in Ireland.....whats the best way to try and find out this information?

Thanks
North shields, tynemouth, prudhoe, west wylam, urchfont, isle of thanet

Once you find him in all the censuses you might find one of them that actually mentions the place........if you're very lucky  ;)

Often the later censuses were more thorough with their info.

Since civil registration of births in Ireland only started in 1864 the other bit of information you will need to know in order to search for church records (after you find where they lived- civil parish if not townland, not just the county) is the family's religion.

Civil registration of non-Catholic marriages started in 1845 so there's a chance, if the family weren't Catholic, that there might be a marriage registration for William's parents.

Often families, or people from the same area, settled near each other. Have you found any relatives nearby? If so, maybe there are clues in the census as to where they were from in Ireland.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Check www.brsgenealogy.com. It has BDM records from most counties in Ireland. There are two William Lowrys on it -one for 1847 one for 1849. None for 1848 though. To see any more of these trascripts you have to shell out €5-and even then they may not list names of parents-though most I`ve looked for have.

Might be worth a look.

Also try www.familysearch.org.
