1851/1861 census lookup please CAMPBELL, Kilmarnock
« on: Saturday 21 June 08 01:02 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone with access who might be able to have a look for my Elizabeth CAMPBELL (born ca. 1797) in Ayrshire in the 1851 or 1861 census? I think that she may have been a widow by that time, but am not positive. I believe she was living in Kilmarnock, surely with one or more of her younger children. A daughter Elizabeth was born in 1841 in Lanarkshire.

The husband and father (Robert Campbell) would have been alive at the time of the 1841 census at least and I guess they would have been in Lanarkshire at that time.
The names of all known children are: Helen (ca. 1827), Margaret (1831, Stirlingshire), Jean (1833, Stirlingshire), Agnes (1839, Lanarkshire), Elizabeth (1841, Lanarkshire) & James (ca. 1845, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire). There were probably more children than this.

Any information from ANY census would be a huge help and very much appreciated!

Raymond

The 1861 census has an Elizabeth & Robert Campbell living at 29 Colliers Row in the High Church District of the Barony parish, Glasgow, unfortunately the birthplaces don't tie in as both give glasgow .

Robert Campbell age 67 Coal Miner
Elizabeth Campbell age 64

Update :- Given Monica's information below I think we can discount this couple in Glasgow as they appear in the 1851 census in Colliers Row.

Hi Raymond

This looks like them in 1851:

Robert Campbell 44, Furnace Man
Elisabeth Campbell 44
Jane Campbell    18
John Campbell    16
William Campbell 14
Agnes Campbell    11
Robert Campbell 7
James Campbell    5
Elisabeth Campbell 3

Address: 1 Cross Row, Eglenton Iron Works, Kilwinning

Everyone is showing a Larbert Stirlingshire place of birth on the transcription index I am looking at.

Monica and Falkyrn - thank you both very much! That is definately them in both 1851 and 1861. In 1861 were they still all listed as born in Larbert, Stirling?

Also, is there any chance to find the family in 1841 (possibilities being Ayrshire, Lanarkshire...maybe even Stirling), or Elizabeth in 1871 if she was still alive?

Once again, many thanks!

Raymond

The entry that Falkryn posted for 1861 shows the following places of birth:

Mother Elizabeth: Larbert, Sterlingshire
Robert - Old Monkland, Lanarkshire
James - Old Monkland, Lanarkshire
Elizabeth - Kilwinning, Ayrshire

I've just spotted another family in 1861  ::) which is closer to the information you gave at the beginning:

Elizabeth Campbell 48, spirit dealer, b. Kilmarnock
John Campbell    23, cabinet maker, b. Kilmarnock
James Campbell    16, Ap House Printer, b. Kilmarnock

Address: 98 Portland St, Kilmarnock

There are a mixture of records showing on IGI (submitted and actual extract) so hard to verify children. In the main the children of Robert Campbell and Elizabeth Hart were those showing for the family in the 1851/61 entries we posted earlier.

The submitted entry on IGI for a James born in 1845 in Kilmarnock, who married a Sarah Russell in 1872, shows mother as Elizabeth Hart but wonder if the place of birth has been confused (given it is a submitted entry) with the other James I have now posted in 1861?

You should be able to verify the line through other documents (marriage certs and death certs.) which will include father's occupation and mother's maiden name. Also census data after the children that you are following married will also let you confirm places of birth.
