James Horton of Boughton Monchelsea
« on: Friday 20 June 08 17:23 BST (UK) »
I have a James Horton (christened 1 April 1792 in Linton, Kent) who married a woman named Sarah previous to 1818.  The living in Boughton Monchelsea for years and years.  Sarah was born between 1795-1798 in Thornham, Kent according to census.

I am trying to find Sarah’s maiden name.  I found a James Horton who married a Sarah Sharp in Maidstone in Oct 1813 and am wondering if this is the right couple or not.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you, Laverdiere

Hi Laverdiere,

I too have come to the conclusion that James married Sarah Clare at Maidston - every place I have looked - the answer is the same!  However, I have access to Boughton Monchelsea records and have found the following births - all children of James and Sarah Horton (labourer) - I donīt know if you have them already?

1818 Jul 19    William
1820 Apr 30    Thomas
1823 Mar 12    Ann Elizabeth
1825 Mar 13    Ellen
1829 Jan 04    James
1830 Dec 26    Lucy
1836 May 01    Frances (daughter)
1836 May 01    Major
1842 Jun 07    Thyrsa Rebecca
1842 Oct 09    Edward
1855 Nov 04    Elizabeth

And just the one marriage recorded:-

1836 Dec 09 William HORTON (bachelor of this parish)Mary BROWN (spinster of this parish)- witnesses:- Sarah Horton and Fred Beeching.

Seems strange that this was the only marriage in Boughton Monchelsea, as they had 11 children!  I donīt have any death records though.

Hope you find this helpful.

Yvonne, thank you for your look-ups.  I has all the children you listed--except Elizabeth. I guess I will keep looking though the marriage of James Horton to Sarah Sharp seems the most likely.

Regards, Laverdiere

Hi my name is Gilda and I am researching my husbands family tree of Horton.

James is in his tree and William is his great great grandfather.  He married Eliza Hards.

I would love to hear from and maybe swap info.  I can be contacted direct on email address removed by moderator - please use the secure Rootschat personal message system to exchange email addresses - thankyou

Hi there,

Just to add - the witnesses at John Horton and Sarah Sharp on 3rd October 1813 at All Saints church Maidstone were John File and Mary Smith - wondered whether these names fitted anywhere?
