Hi Gunner,

Received your PM and answered all safe and sound.

Anyone interested, do a Google search on Banastre Tarleton. There's a good CV on his life.

Hi Kieran
Been amusing myself having a look to see if i can find any links between our two families, not sure if you are interested in the following but seeing as i have written it all down thought i would send it anyway.
Everything is how i have found it spelt.

Birth (from 1837 and BMD)
ERNEST Augustus Alfred Tarlton (no e)
Easthampstead  (District of) Berks June  1859  2C 381

1871 EDWARD Augustus Alfred TARLTON
aged 13 born Sandhurst Hampshire
a BOY living in the District Royal Military Asylum for children of soldiers of the regular Army, Chelsea

1891 census ERNEST Augustus TARLETON aged 33  boarder  at Star Inn Wellington Street Woolwich (sleeping in stable) a clerk

ERNEST Augustus Arthur Tarleton
married Maria FULKES born c1861.
June 1892 Woolwich 1D 1840

1901 census
ERNEST A TARLETON    42       Government Clerk
Maria (nee Fulkes)                           38
Ernest Charles **          5
Leonard C                      3
Ernest A born Easthampstead Berks
Maria         "    Woolwich
Ernest and Leonard born Plumstead
living at 9, Congo Road, Plumstead
** Ernest Charles Woolwich Dec   1895 1D 1212

1891 census
George FULKES 60 House Lord Accountant born Bucks
 Harriet              57                                         "   Eton
Henry Ashton     17                                    Kennington
MARIA**             30                                    London
Living Lyndhurst Place, Camberwell. London
dont know if that means House of Lords!!

So it looks like Edward decided to become Ernest  i have searched all through 1837.com and there is no trace of an Ernest being born, with or without the e in Tarlton , also he must of  liked the look of an e in the surname (my lot are the opposite, lost the e somewhere along the way.(This is probably down to not being able to spell properly or even in the transcription of the census)
This hasnt really proved anything because of Edward/Ernest  being in what looks like a military school his parents are not listed on the census, only way to find out is by sending for his birth cert . So maybe we are long lost g.g.g. cousins - who knows!!!

Bye the way, dont know why, but if you click on your profile and try to write to your hotmail address it comes up with 'memeber cant be found'

me again, sorry, i have got my Berks and Bucks mixed up.
In the school it says born Sandhurst Hamps.
Another source says Sandhurst Berks
and Easthampstead is the District in Berks that Sandhurst came under.
So they all saying he was born in Berks apart from the Army that has put Sandhurst in Hamps. (Maybe it changed)

And if you are related to Jim Tarleton who used to work in Brimsdown, give him my regards.....he is/was a target rifle shooter (silly me, that's what I thought the 'gunner' stood for).
