From the 1871 and 1881 census, it would seem that Mary Crosbie died in the later part of the 1860s and Maxwell married Mary Cowan sometime after 1868/9:

1871
Green Mill, Caerlaverock
815 ED 2 page 1

Maxwell, 43, labourer, b. New Abbey
Mary, 34,
Jane, 10
Whillhilmina, 8
Richard, 6
Mary, 1 month
James Cowan, stepson, 2

all  b. Caerlaverock except Maxwell

1881
Holland Bank, Caerlaverock
815 ED 3

Maxwell Clark, 53, labourer, b. New Abbey
Mary Cowan or Clark, 45, labourer's wife
Richard Crosbie Clark,  17, labourer,
James Cowan, 12, stepson
Mary Clark, 10
Joseph Cowan Clark, 7
Elizabeth Clark, 5,
Edward N? Clark, 3,

all b.Caerlaverock except Maxwell

I haven't found a marriage for Maxwell and Mary Cowan yet. It might well have been a common law one  :-\

Another MI from Kirkgunzeon.

I think that this one is for William Clark and Agnes Millar:

William Clark d. 20 June 1853, aged 65
wife Agnes Millar d. 26 Dec 1848, aged 56
son John d. 20 June 1835, aged 15
son William d. Gateside 7 June 1869, aged 54 (wife Jean Leachman Stewart d. Terregles village 22 march 1908, aged 91)
daughter Jessie d. 28 Feb 1881, aged 35
daughter Elizabeth d. Old Mill, Lohfoot 7 July 1911, aged 69 (husband James Hunter)

Erected by son Maxwell

Trying this from a different angle with naming conventions'

Mary Crosbie was bpt. 15 September 1822, Caerlaverock. Her father was James Crosbie. From her death record of 1869 her mother is given as Janet nee Craik

Maxwell Clark and Mary Crosbie's children were:

James - Mary's father
Janet - Mary's mother
Agnes - possibly Maxwell's mother
Maxwell - ?
Mary - Mary
Jane
Willhelmina
Richard

With Mary Cowan (parents James and Mary nee Craik):

(James Cowan before marriage to Maxwell)
Mary
Joseph
Elizabeth
Edward

This is doesn't fit perfectly - we're missing a William but there is a daughter Willhelmina.

I think if I had to gamble, I'd say that Maxwell's parents were William Clark and Agnes Millar.

His death must have been very badly mis-indexed  :-\

Hi Lis.

Sorry if this seems as if I am hijacking your posting.

Maxwell Clark is a significant Surname in Scottish history.

James Maxwell Clark was the man who discovered the theory about electro-magnetism or something riveting like that.  I think the present day equivalent is the use of MR scans in medical diagnosis.

James Maxwell Clark's father inherited some property at Parton under the proviso that he change his name - I think it was to Clark from Maxwell.  James was born circa 1832 at Parton - and lived in the local manor with his family.  I think he then moved to Edinburgh to be further educated.

I don't know if this is of any relevance at all and if it is not I apologize.

Yours J.A.
