**COMPLETED** Borland Family to NZ abt 1863
« on: Tuesday 17 June 08 12:01 BST (UK) »
Hiya

I'm hoping someone may have some info or shipping records for the following family:

Annie ANDERSON nee BORLAND was approx 4yrs of age when she came to NZ from Scotland
I think her parents were Thomas & Ann BORLAND.
Thomas cemetery record (thanks to COD database) shows he came to NZ in 1863
If I have the right parents they had 6 daughters.

Much appreciated
Hev

You really have to work from the known, backwards.

You should get your Annies death certificate or marriage cert to confirm her parents.

Hi Hev,

A J. BORLAND aged 36, single, arrived at Port Chalmers on the ALHAMBRA via Melbourne VIC AUS. It departed that port on 7 March 1863.

This is the only record I could find, so perhaps the family was on one of the many immigrant ships that didn't call at Melbourne.

I concur with Mk2_Zephyr about working back from the known to the unknown, but have you checked the 1861 Scotland Census for her aged about 1? This might be a short cut.

Do you have any other information about her which might help? (Edit: She married Thomas John ANDERSON in 1882)

A long bow being drawn here...but there is a reference for a Annie ANDERSON in People of Port Chalmers p.22. This was compiled by Ian Church if I recall correctly.

If you think this might be the correct person I suggest that you email the Port Chalmers Museum, Beach Street, Port Chalmers at: pcmuseum@xtra.co.nz as they hold this resource. It is a living document, e.g. they will edit or add entries if new information is provided, so feel free to do so.

Hi Riley & Mk2_Zephyr

Thank you both for your interest
I agree I will need to request the marriage cert to confirm Annie's parents
Now I've realised that Annie was actually born in Tasmania, then came to NZ with her parents at age 4.

Riley, thank you for your suggestion re Port Chalmers Museum.
I will follow that up and see what happens.

I did find there is a photo held at the Otago Early Settlers Museum
Only data with this says that she came to NZ on the Electric 1863 but I haven't been able to find that either.

Cheers
Hev

Hi Hev,

The ELECTRIC, Captain Marshall, travelled to Port Chalmers, departed ENG? on 3 June 1863 with 224 passengers http://members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps/shipping/mig-nz2.htm

From NZ Bound http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nzbound/otago1863.htm we learn that she arrived on 4 June 1863 and her port of departure was Glasgow SCT and 126 passengers...hummm, this conflicts with the info above...++submit more cheese++redo from start++

Ships to NZ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~shipstonz/portchalmers1.html it seems to be 118 passengers. No link to any passenger list website.

Still early days but there are some ideas for later.

Thank you Riley

I'm thinking I'll put a search request to the Andrew Turnbull Library and see if they have any shipping lists

Appreciate your help

Hi Hev,

I have to go in to Archives for another enquiry next week so I'll have a quick look for the ELECTRIC there as they hold shipping lists.

If you look on Papers Past http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast you'll find a few references to Borland including one for a Thomas Borland who lost part of one leg in a train accident in Port Chalmers, and a 'D. BORLAND' who was a passenger to NZ on the TIMARU in 1883.

SHOCKING ACCIDENT.
Tuapeka Times, Volume VIII, Issue 461, 19 May 1875, Page 5:
A very serious accident happened on the Dunedin and Port Chalmers rail way line last week. It appears that Thomas Borland, laborer, of Athol place, was walking along the line towards his house last evening, at about 7.50 o'clock, and when he reached the end of Hanover street his right foot got jammed between the rails and he was unable to extricate himself. The up-train, the last one that night, at this time had just left the Pelichet Bay Station, and although Borland called for help, the train bad passed over his left leg a little below the knee before any assistance could be rendered. Some neighbors then got him extricated and had him placed on a door and conveyed to the Hospital
