Can not find birth registry
« on: Monday 16 June 08 17:11 BST (UK) »
I am trying to look for my gt Grandfather William Riches. birth registry. I have been looking on other sites for Vol and page no., but can not find him anywhere. Does anybody know why I can not find him. From his Police service records it gave his date of birth and place of birth. 25.5.1878 Earsham. I know that his father name was James. the ages on both marriage and Death certificate corrisponse with the year he was born. We also can not locate his Navy records and according to his Polce service he was in the Navy at Chatham.
Can any body shed some light on to this.
any suggestion would be gratefully recieved.

Earsham was in Depwade Registration District: there is a William Riches, 3q 1878, Depwade 4b, 215.

Thank you for your responce. William did not seem to have middle name as far as we know as his son also William never had a middle name. Yes I did see that there was a birth in Depwade in the 3q but I am not sure that it is him as he is down to have his birthday in May. but that is not to say it is not him.Unless there is a way to look at the birth cert before I buy it, it will have to waite till I have proof otherwise. I did also find him on the census. We know that he joined the Royal Navy in 1899. Perhaps he joined because his father had just died (1899) leaving his step mother Mary Ann.  One day I will get to the bottom of this puzzle. Thanks again.

Although he was born in May (i.e. the 2nd quarter) it is quite possible that the birth was not registered until the 3rd quarter, hence the discrepancy.

Hi Cliveanjean

You can write directly to Depwade Regestry Office. Give them the birth date and place of birth and say that is from his Police service record (in case the record is incorrect) but tell them you are only looking for a William Riches who has a father called James Riches.

They need a £7.00 sterling cheque (which they will return if no cert found) and a stamped addressed envelope. I usually make my cheque out to Superintendant Registrar. Most local Register Office staff are really helpful & will search a few years either side of the year you give them.
