Hi there,

Have just found a connection with William Nicholls & Te Whakaawa.

Their Daughter Alice Grey Nicholls married Charles John Dearle...
Their Daughter Annie Dearle married George William Rogers...
Their Daughter Elsa Mabel Jean Rogers, born 1907 Morrinsville, married Eric Howard in 1928...

I am related to Elsa through my father's side. She passed away 1956, Tauranga.

If anyone can share with me any information on these families, their life in and around Te Aroha etc,  and especially certificates or photos i would be so very grateful.

I have Elsa's Birth, Death and Marriage certificates.

Yes I have general info such as Births, deaths and marriages...at least back to William Nicholls.

Would love to find more indepth info about the family and especially photos...

Just following up this branch of the family after about 3 years!

Does anyone have any 'new' information, are these ancestors published in any history books etc?

Would love to see some photos of them...

 

Also, Does anyone know where Hera Te Whakaawa was buried?

I may have told you this already Anita, but (Hera) Te Whakaawa Nicholls was buried on Matakana Island. She died 1887 according to records a librarian at Tauranga library gave me. Te Whakaawa's name was recorded on a list of people buried on Matakana Island with the date 1887 next to her name. One of my cousins is over on the island alot, but she has been unable to find a headstone with Te Whakaawa's name on it on the urupa - but it may have deteriorated since she died 124 years ago.

The second marae link is intresting under HISTORY
they say they became known as Ngai Te Rangi

looking at the family tree given for Hera earlier given...earliest descendant given was Tauaiti and

there lineage is given in this document, confirming they were Ngaiterangi

A war party of Waitaha and Ngati Ranginui decided to go to Maketu and do something to take revenge on Ngaiterangi. They had got as far as Te Tumu when they came upon two men of Ngaiterangi collecting toetoe to thatch the roof of a house. These men were Tuwhiwhia, one of the sons of Rangihouhiri, and Tauaiti, son of Tuwhiwhia. They killed Tuwhiwhia, cut off his head and put his headless body in a canoe and set it adrift down the Kaituna. Tauaiti was taken back to Tauranga, tortured, and then killed. Before he died Tauaiti prophesied, "My pain is shallow compared to the ocean of pain to come."
