Yes that's how I'm reading it..we forget that quite a few tribes moved about 100s of years ago as settlement areas/battle occured....here is the history from that Matakana marae site

Te Rangihouhiri was the Chief from whom Ngai Te Rangi tribe got its name. It was he who
led his people from Tawhitirahi Pa at Opotiki to Uawa (Tolaga Bay) where they enslaved. Having
fought their captors and come to an arrangement, they left the area and travelled north. They s
ettled in many places and fought many battles. It was while they were living in Te Awa o te Atua
near Matata that Rangihouhiri oldest son Tutengaehe was slain in battle at Herekaki. When Te
Rangihouhiri at Whakapaukorero heard of his son’s death, he made the prophecy. “Haere e tama
mou tai ahiahi moku tai awatea.” “Oh my son, you have gone by the evening tide , I will follow by
the morning tide.” And so it was during that great battle of Poporohuamea near Maketu, Te
Rangihouhiri lost his life. From that time the tribe became known as Ngai Te Rangi.
 
According to whakapapa the Ngai Te Rangi arrived in Tauranga towards the end of the 17th

Perhaps some Ngatimura traveled up to Tauranga from Tuhoe, and more or less merged with Ngaiterangi?

far from an authority but we are talking 1600s that this main movement took place
then later the subtribes develop as numbers increase/merges increase

actually christine of Sooty's pages would be an excellent person to email as a specialist in many areas including the coastal areas on that coast

Ngāi Te Rangi
Ngāi Te Rangi are descended from crew members of the Mataatua canoe, and Whaene, brother of Ranginui. The tribe originally lived in Ōpōtiki, but were pushed out by Ngāti Hā and migrated to the Gisborne district. They were not there long before trouble arose again and they moved around the coast to Tōrere and to Whakatāne, finally settling at Matatā. By this time, in the 18th century, they had become known as Ngāti Te Rangihouhiri, named after their leader Te Rangihouhiri. He was the son of Rōmainohorangi, also known as Rongomainohorangi.

While they were there, Tamapahore, the brother of Te Rangihouhiri, went to visit his relations at Maketū. Despite a gift of land, it was not long before war broke out. During one of the battles Tūtengaehe, Te Rangihouhiri’s eldest son, was killed. Overcome with grief, Te Rangihouhiri prophesied his own demise, saying, ‘Farewell my son. You depart on the evening tide, and I shall follow you on the morning tide.’

The next day Te Rangihouhiri entered into battle at Poporohuamea near Little Waihī, and met his end. On his death his people adopted the name Ngāi Te Rangi, rallied to avenge his death, and took possession of the land.

Ngāi Te Rangi were now determined to gain a foothold in Tauranga Moana, the home of their ancestor Whaene. After a series of battles, they secured Tauranga Moana as their permanent home, displacing the Ngāti Ranginui and Waitaha people then in occupation. They eventually settled much of the Tauranga Moana region, including the islands Matakana, Tūhua (Mayor Island) and Mōtītī.

I've driven past the Rereatukahia Marae. I traced most of the maori land that my GG grandmother Belle Steadman was a trustee of. There are blocks of land at Whakamarama and Rereatukahia (between Tauranga and Katikati, across from Matakana Island) and also on Matakana Island. I have visited all but the Matakana Island blocks.

I thought that the main marae would be Kutaroa (not mentioned on the Ngaiterangi website, but it's a small marae near Opureora Marae) or Opureora on Matakana Island - because there's a block of land still in 2 of Belle's granddaughter's names... and because Te Whakaawa is buried at Te Ahi Puhipuhi, which is the Kutaroa Cemetery on Matakana Island and is actually part of the block of land that Belle's granddaughters are trustees of. But I've also heard mention of a Te Aroha marae being the main marae with respect to Susan and her mother Te Whakaawa.

I see that the custodian of Opureora Marae is ^(*). The Kuka's/Ngarae's were cousins of the Nicholls family.

I won't rest til we get to the bottom of it all ha ha.

Are you registered with the iwi?
Some emails to the surrounding Katikati and Matakana Maraes..should help finalise the connections
I know what you mean about the land lots..my sons are just the same..with lots of ownershipnspread out over a quite large area

Yours is complicated more -  those land ownership and sales disputes show that confusion existed between maori owners and the crown alike..no doubt heightened by the changes that seem to kept happening in the iwi itself..past affiliations to other areas etc.

PS. I find it extra interesting as my Earl's & Cornes setlled on some of the land in question following the Gate Pa battles.  The Katikati Historical Society/Museum may know more of the history
