Shellam (Shillam)
« on: Sunday 15 June 08 04:19 BST (UK) »
George Lodge Shillam b abt 1798 Brookend, Wollastone, Gloucestershire married Jane?? b abt 1801.
Children that I know of are Alfred b abt 1831, Mary Ann b abt 1832 and George b abt 1836.

Any help with more information about this family would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder who told you or where you found all the info. you give?  Whenever I see an "abt" date I expect the info. to have come from an IGI submitted entry.  It didn't seem to in this case and even if it had, the "abt" would apply equally to the location and the date.  The LDS seem not to be all that concerned about such minor details.

Checking on Parloc,  the free parish locator prog. - get it via http://www.parloc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/parlocdl.html - reveals no such parish as Wollaston but there is a Woolaston - no Shillams on the Hugh Wallis site's "Woolston".

The LDS library seems to have some confusion as to the name of the place but there are no extracted data batch numbers given.

The IGI gives no details of your GLS Shillams.

If you obtained the details from a census, you must not rely too heavily on the locations and ages given  - there are many thousands of census errors in birth locations and ages.

Regards

Chas

Have a look at the Forest of Dean Family History site, you'll find quite a few Shillams in the transcribed parish registers.

You need to register but it's free to search http://www.forest-of-dean.net/

The George Shillam and Jane who Myfi found the marriage for, are living in Minchinhampton 1841 and 1851, he's an Ag. Lab.

1841 HO107/362  book 5  folio 19  page 33

1851 HO107/1966  folio 7  page 7

Minchinhampton is wrong side of the River Severn  ;)

Woolaston is near to Lydney on the Gloucester to South Wales road.
