Hi Jac2,

Thankyou for your prompt reply - I wonder what the lingering illness was?

I know I am a bit cheeky but please could you look up his son: -
George SIMPSON dob 6/01/1814 Baldridge, Dunfermline.  He disappears on the 1851 census and we think he must have been involved in a mining accident.
The family are in Clackmannan in 1841.  He marries Helen Paterson on the 11th April 1840.  By 1851 she is remarried and living in Dunfermline.

Thanks again Tab11 :-\

Hi Jac2,

Thank you so much - we have been searching for that info for many years.

What do you think it means?  I will try and google it.

hi tab11 :)

glad to be of help.
lingering illness is most likely emphzemia (miners lung).
water on the head comes up a lot, most likely fluid in the brain, causing the brain to swell. don't quote me on this. if i'm wrong someone is sure to point out the correct meaning.
