Hi, Kim.  What do you know already?  There's no database of all railway workers.  I have a CD with a lot of railwaymen on it, but it's only those who appeared in the staff magazines.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

It would be extremely helpful if you could give an indication of the approximate date that you are interested in and where he lived.  This would help identify the railway company involved and might point to some records.  If you tell us his name someone might find him for you.

His name is William Hazell.  His wife is shown on the 1881 census in Harpurhey near Manchester (Elizabeth Hazell) as married but on the 1891 census she is shown as a widow.  He must have worked away.  On the 1881 census it showed two of her youngest children were born in Ingleton (1872 and 1875) but she had moved to Manchester by 1881.  I wondered if he had an accident.  He would have been born about 1840.  Thanks for your help.

This would seem to suggest that your ancestor worked for the LNWR or the Midland Railway.  The Manchester connection suggests probably the latter.

There wasn't too much Midland Railway around Manchester.  The LNWR had lots http://www.lnwrs.org.uk/Map/MapBb.php
