Hi Corky
I have just trawled through the 1851/61 census of Dunham Massey/Sinderland/Partington/Warburton/Carrington on CD as some of the writing is very poor, but cannot find a James Howard born 1847.

I also looked on the 1841 for a Joseph Howard Carter and came up blank.

There are certainly Howard families in Partington on the census, but no Joseph or James of the correct age.

I found the same info as Reiver.

There is a James Howard born Sinderland 1844 parents William and Mary (those on the census)

James born Oldham christened Bowdon 1850 parents Thomas and Ann

James born Altrincham christened Bowdon 1851 parents Samuel and Martha.

On the 1851
Joseph Broady 40 Publican
Martha Broady 39 born Sinderland
Mary Ann Broady 18 born Lymm
Betsy Broady 13 born Lymm
Susannah Howard 12 step dau born Altrincham
Samuel Howard 11 step son born Altrincham
James Howard 9 step son born Altrincham
Alfred Broady 9 born Lymm
Edward Howard 6 born Altrincham

1851 Sinderland
John and Esther Calderbank and family
Joseph Howard grand son born Timperley

1851
School House Carrington
Charles Howard 12 scholar born Partington

1861 Sinderland Road Dunham Massey
Charles Whitehead Head 27
Mary Howard visitor unm 20 born Partington

Reiver mentions that in 1871 there is a James Howard 25 living with Joseph and Mary Dawson.  He is not living with them in 1851 which makes me think he is not Mary's child.

Did James have any siblings?  If so what were their names?

Kind regards
Su

Hi

This seems to be getting more confusing by the day.  Unfortunately, I cannot say if James had any brothers or sisters, I did ask my aunt earlier but she was unable to help.  My aunt seems to be under the impression that there was some truth in the story about James being illegitimate.  She told me that many stories were circulated and one of the stories in particular was that James's mother was unable to look after him and he was brought up by the church. She is also convinced that he took his mothers surname (Howard) I do remember my grandfather, Fred Howard talking about the Partington area.  Just wondering, if a young girl had a child and was unable to cope for whatever reason, would the church become involved?

Hi Corky
Answering your last question first, I think the church could well assist in some way though I am not sure what that help would necessarily be.

I am sure that the church probably involved here would be Bowdon Parish Church. The parish covered a very wide area and certainly included Partington.  Any register entries I would expect to see in the records of that parish.

Your aunt is definite that James was born in 1847.  He said he was 34 in Liverpool in 1881 which tallies.

I've just had a eureka moment  :) :) :) :)   I've just used FreeBMD to seek the birth of any child registered in Altrincham in 1847.  I had already tried James with no luck in Altrincham in 1846, 47 or 1848.  Just put in Howard as a surname but no first name.   Got one reply.   Not James but 'Male'  :) :) :)  Registered in March Quarter Vol 19 page 5. Incidentally I also found a 'Male'  Howard registered in Altrincham the year before (1846).  The only other one in 1846 was a Sanuel in Dec quarter.  I think your next tack is to look at the Bowdon Parish Registers at either Chester Record Office or at Trafford Local Studies Library at Sale.

My feeling is that one of the Male Howard cetificates will be yours.

Best wishes
Reiver
