Cumann na mBan member list?
« on: Tuesday 10 June 08 01:29 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if there is a complete list of Cumann na mBan / Cumann na nGael (Dublin) members available anywhere? I'm specifically interested in the period 1914-1930. Online resources would be ideal but all suggestions are welcome.
I know for a fact that my granny and her sister were involved & I'm trying to find out what circles they were moving in around this time.

Cheers,

Hello Sean,

"Cumann na mBan and the Irish Revolution" by Cal McCarthy was published last year by Collins Press of Cork. There may be records relating to this organisation in several of the archives in Ireland. The NAI would be a good place to start. Cal's book may mention some of the sources where records can be found.

Cheers for that Christopher. I'm only here a wet week, but from browsing around I can see that you're a treasure chest of information!  :)

Thanks,

Hello Sean,

There's a page on "Printed material relating to Sinn Féin propaganda, 1915-1920"
(submitted by Joanne Stewart, B.A., P.G.C.E., September 1998) on the Queen's University, Belfast, School of Modern History site which mentions that "The offices of Cumann Na mBan were situated at 6, Harcourt Street, Dublin, the same building to which the National Council of Sinn Féin was relocated. A pamphlet entitled "The present duty of Irishwomen" listed the Dublin and country members of the movement."

Several Cumann na mBan items are shown on the "Memorabilia from The 1916 Easter Rising, its Prelude and Aftermath" website.  www.theeasterrising.eu/150CumannNamBan/CumannnamBan.htm

Hi Sean

Who are you looking for?

I have the book "No ordinary Women" by Sinead McCoole (Irish Female Activists in the Revolutionary years 1900-1923). There is an index of women at the back, which is why I bought it as my granny's sister who was detained at Kilmainham is there. If you like I can look up the book.

That'd be great Rachel, if you could have a look for me. My granny's name was Christina O'Connor. If you could have a look for her sister while you're at it - Kathleen (Katie) O'Connor. The information I have is that she was a member of Cumann na nGael, and was jailed in Kilmainham in the autumn of 1922.

Cheers for the offer of help.

Sean.

Thanks Christopher. My gran was listed as a member of the HQ branch, so those links could come in handy.

Hello Sean,

Fanny O'Connor must have been related to Arthur (Art) O'Connor (1888 – 10 May 1950) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_O'Connor
