Neil McPhee/MacPhie and variants
« on: Saturday 07 June 08 23:12 BST (UK) »
Hello All

I'm trying to find more information on Neil McPhee/MacPhie.  He married Marion MacDonald on 18 Mar 1823 Duirinish (their marriage record gives no further useful info).

Neil MacPhie d 15 May 1872 Harlosh, Duirinish age 96, informant John MacPhie, son.  Father Norman MacPhie, Crofter, dec, mothers name unknown.  Death record also states he was a Chelsea Pensioner.

In 1841 he is age 50 bc1791 Inverness, Pensioner (spelled McPhee)
In 1851 he is age 65 bc1786 Duirinish Tensioner (assuming pensioner) of the 42nd Highs
In 1861 he is age 72 bc1789 Duirinish, Chelsea Pensioner.

I have searched Scotlands People and everywhere else I can think of but can't find a birth for Neil which matches.

Also I found on The National Archives:
Royal Hospital, Chelsea: Discharge Documents of Pensioners
Neil McPhie born Kilmore, Invernesshire
Served in 42nd Foot Regiment; 71st Foot Regiment.
Discharged age 50 after 27 years fo service.
Covering dates 1802

From the above info I am assuming Neil McPhee/MacPhie was in the 42nd Highlanders (known as The Blackwatch) as were descendants of his.

I am hoping someone can help me find the birth of Neil.

Kind Regards
Rachel McPhee

Hi Rachel,

Your post on Rootschat was brought to my attention by my friend Fred Campbell, who is researching his family tree. Fred is not so computer literate so brought the post he found by accident to me to see if I could work out how to make contact with you. I have helped Fred out quite a bit with his family tree over the past few years and am fairly conversant with the state of play as regards Fred's research into his Skye forebears. I cannot tell you the exact date of birth of Neil McPhie but I can tell you that he was at Waterloo and also fought at the battle of Salamanca, in Spain .  Neil McPhie had at least 5 children. These were Euphemia, John, Alexander, Jessie, and Catherine. Fred is descended from Jessie McPhie who married an Alexander Campbell on the 10th Feb. 1876 at Lonmore, in the Parish of Duirinish, in the County of Inverness. Neil McPhie is Fred's 3rd great grandfather on his dad's side. I look forward to hearing from you.

Grant

Hello Grant,
I believe that Fred is my first cousin on the Campbell side, son of Robert, my mother Mary being Roberts older sister. My great grandfather is Alexander, husband to Janet, ( Jessie), McPhie. Neil is my great, great, grandfather. Would very much like to communicate with Fred.
Best regards.

Hi there,

I am sure Fred would be interested to talk to you. Were your grandparents Robert Campbell and Pauline Ethel Jeans?

Cheers,

Grant

Hello Grant,

Robert Campbell is my uncle on my mothers side. My Grandfather is Donald Campbell son of Alexander Campbell and Janet McPhie.
I assumed that Fred was the son of Robert and Pauline or is he the next generation. ??? - I remember Robert quite well from early visits to Skye as a child, he married Pauline in Edinburgh, 1946.

Hi there,

Sorry, the fault is mine, I was looking at the wrong generation. So your mother Mary was the fourth child of Donald Campbell and Mary Ann Carr. This couple married in June 1898 at Larbert, in Stirling. Donald Campbell and Mary Ann Carr had nine children as far as Fred and I have been able to discover. These were Neil, Donald, Ann, Mary, Henry, Dolina, Jessie, William and lastly Robert. Fred is descended from your mother Mary's younger brother william. William married Rose Marjorie Jeans abt. 1943. This marriage produced a son called Frederick who in turn married an Agnes Ryan and this marriage produced the Fred I know. Hope this clears up the confusion.

Hi there,

My genealogy software tells me that both Fred Campbell and yourself are each other's first cousin once removed.

Hi Grant,
Yes you have it right, Fred and I are second cousins. I would like to ask Fred if his father Frederick had a sister Peggy Mary and indeed were they born in the Isle of Skye ?. " is it Frederick James ? "
The following are the children of Donald Campbell and Mary Ann Carr:
Alexander 1897, Neil 1899, Donald 1901, Annie 1903, Mary 1907, Dolina 1909,
Jesse May 1911, William 1913, Robert 1915, Katie Jane 1916, Henry 1919.
I remember your Grandfather William very well even though I was just a wee boy. William and Rose visited with us for a few days after the wars end. They were returning from England. William helped my father remove the air raid shelter from the back garden, my how time flies. We lived in the Stenhouse district of Edinburgh. My family emigrated to Canada 1957 / 1958.

Hi there,

You have added to our storehouse of knowledge as I don't think Fred knew about Alexander being the first born child or about Katie Jane. Fred is always adding to his knowledge about his tree so I may wrong there.
Fred lives in Perth, Scotland, as do I. We meet up in the local library from time to time. Frederick James is a popular name combination with these Campbells it would seem.
