Sheriff Hill Asylum
« on: Saturday 07 June 08 19:24 BST (UK) »
In the 1871 census some of my ancestors are shown as residing in the Sheriff Hill West Side Asylum. Does anybody have any information about this Asylum? My searches have revealed nothing.

Hi Pete:

"Sheriff Hill is about two miles south of Gateshead and derives its name from the custom which formerly prevailed of the sheriff of Newcastle coming this place to meet the justices itinerant Here is the parish church and places of worship belonging to the Wesleyan Methodists and the Wesleyan Connexion. Sheriff Hill Lunatic Asylum is pleasantly situated on an eminencee about two and a half miles south of Gateshead from which a fine aspect of Ravensworth and its vicinity may be obtained. Inicky,

The quote which Barbara gave was taken from Whellan's Directory of 1856, when, presumably, Sheriff Hill really was two miles distant from Gateshead.
