Looking for the Following family in the 1871 Cenus.
Hugh Hendrie 56  Monkton
Margaret Hendrie 56  Ayr

Your Hendries appear to be as elusive as my own in the census records 

There are several Margaret Hendries and several Hugh Hendries but none together.


P.S. are your lot any relation to the Hendries of St Quivox or Wallacetown in Ayr, Some of my line descended from James Hendrie/Jane (Jean) Mair through their son John Hendrie & Jane Dickie

Yes my  Hendries do come from St Quivox and Wallacetown. At the moment my Hendries come from Pete Hendry and Mary Monaghan or Madden late 1700s. I only  have 2 children for them, which is James Hendrie born about 1823 and married to Marion wood. A Charles Hendrie born about 1837 married to Catherine Coluquon. But i can,t believe that is all the children Peter and Mary had as they seem so far apart. Peter and Mary may have come from Ireland. So I am trying to find out if there were any other siblings.

Possibly a link further back - my earliest is james born circa 1777 who married Jane Mair. John Hendrie (their son) was born in 1816 but is the only child I can trace at the moment.

John married Jane Dickie from St Quivox and they had
James,John,Charles,Alexander, Jane (my great x2 grandmother),Margaret, Grace,George & Elizabeth

Why is it that nobody else seems to be related to our families even though they seem to be the same surnames and from the same area. I got lucky with one of mine which is the Youngs originally from Ireland in the 1860s. I could only find the one i was following and only the other day  i found his parents deaths and 1 cenus with other siblings which makes up any problems that keep happening. Have you checked the Mi,s for your family only i have 8 Books  for St Quivox and Ayr if they would be of any help for any of your names. I also have part 1 & 2 Disc,s for early Ayrshire Burials, But you have to have both a Christian name and surname.

Hi Falkryn,
I made a mistake about the Ayrshire Burials you only need the surname, I think you need the surname if there are to many with the same surname.

Thanks for the offer, I have the St Quivox MI book and unfortunately there's no trace of my lot. I don't know what it is about the 1871 census either as several of them disappear without a trace only to reappear in the 1881 records.

Do You have the Newton Green Burial Ground Book Because There is a MI Erected by James Hendrie For his Parents John Hendrie & Jane Dickie and some other family deaths.
