decipher / translate Fürhrungs-Buch from 1880s
« on: Wednesday 04 June 08 13:06 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can decipher and translate some pages of a Fürhrungs-Buch from the 1880s.

It belonged to Carl Heinrich Thomas SCHÖNHERR, Schiffszimmermann (ships carpenter), born 1859 in Flensburg, Germany. Unfortunately, the images have been scanned from computer printouts made from not the highest resolution scans, so they are a few generations from the originals and are a bit faint. Here is the first page - I'll attach the rest in subsequent posts.

Here are pages 2 and 3 (I cropped page 2 to make the file smaller) - each set of pages (2 and 3, 4 and 5, etc.) detail Carl's time on a particular ship.

Here are pages 6 and 7, detailing Carl's time on the S.M.S. Friedrich Carl 24 Apr 1883-28 Sep 1883. I believe this was the Panzerfregatte S.M.S. Friedrich Carl - I found a nice little photo of said ship online.

Hi Lambensor,

I'm wondering if a "combined effort " might help here.

How about posting a link on Ahnenforschung.Org asking for help on decyphering, then we can do translation ?  :)
My thought behind this is that teh germans will probably know (and more easily recognise) the 'stock phrases' where we will still be struggling .....

regards,
Bob

Thanks, Bob, that makes sense. Which particular board would be best to post upon?

I suggest Lesehilfe (Reading help) as that is where all this sort of stuff goes.
Use the "präfix" ? ? ?, that means "I need help"  ;D

I'll translate there, if necessary  :)

Because of the link on genealogy.net i found your thread
and transliterated the Führungs-Buch into Antiqua letters.
The translation into english is on you now.
By the way it is interesting to read because of the variety of
delicts and punishments.
