STROUD family, Kent and London, 1901 help please
« on: Thursday 20 January 05 17:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Please can anyone help? I have made extensive searches of the 1901 censuses and birth/death registrations, but haven't been able to solve my mystery.

I am trying to trace Brian Stroud, who was born in Edenbridge, Kent, in 1937. His father was Ernest Leonard Stroud, born in 1914 or early 1915. Ernest's father, according to his marriage certificate, was James Henry Stroud. It is believed that Ernest came from London (Acton?) but this is not confirmed.

I have found an Ernest Leonard in the right place at the right time, BUT his father is Samuel, not James Henry.

James Henry was a gardener at the time of Ernest's wedding in 1937. I am guessing that he was at least 6 years old at the time of the 1901 census, if not older.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions about how to get around this brick wall!

Thank you :-)

Don't know if you have the birth cert of Ernest, but your message suggests not.

Found his birth, Ernest L STROUD mothers maiden name DRUCE born Mar quarter of 1915 in Fulham ref 1a 397.

You can order it online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

It'll give you more info on who mum was.I'll see if I can find a marriage between a Druce and Stroud but may be difficult without her christian name.

Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi Carol, thank you for looking. I already have this birth certificate... and the father's name is Samuel, not James Henry.  I even found an Ernest Leonard, born in England, right place right time, who died in Canada--and his dad was Samuel too (probably the same Ernest that you found).

I couldn't find another... maybe dad changed his name just to confuse me :-D  Or maybe they came to London from a completely different part of the country.

This is the most 'challenging' part of my family's tree!  :-)

Best regards,

Alison

Hi everyone,

Quick update on this topic: WE FOUND BRIAN! He has been reunited with his mother and sisters after 62 years. Names were wrongly recorded on at least one certificate, emmigrations, people known by second names... but in the end, we found each other.

NEVER GIVE UP!!!

:-)
