James Welsh Gay & Isabella Shearer

James Welsh Gay is (was) my grandfather - in - law (Dec 19, 1889 - Nov 15, 1987) originally came from Belfast, Ireland (we think). He married Isabella Shearer (April 18, 1901-May 08, 1994) on July 02, 1920 in Edinburugh, Scotland.
They had quite a large family - 9 children that are known with possibly 2 more that have not been varified.

3) Sophia Begg Gay (have heard of her, but have no information)
4) James Welsh Gay (Aug 8, 1924 in Edinburgh, Scotland - Sept 15, 1983 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
5) Duncan Shearer Gay (Jan 10, 1926 in Edinburgh, Scotland - Dec 2, 1973 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada)
6) Jean Shearer Gay (Feb 18, 1929 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada - June 20, 1977 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada
7) Irene Gemmel Gay (March 6, 1930 in Edinburgh, Scotland - Aug ?, ? in Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
Isobel Shearer Gay (Oct 14, 1931 in Edinburgh, Scotland - Dec 25, 1994 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada) **My Mother-in-law
9) George Smith Gay (nothing known - alive in Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
10) Robert Brydon Gay (June 9, 1936 in Edinburgh, Scotland - June 14, 2004 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
11) Elaine Gay - (Adopted by James and Isabella. Currently living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada)

I have tried to gather info via family members still alive, but do not live close to them and have not had much success.
I was wondering if anyone recognized the attached photo of "CLerk Street". Apparently this is where the "Gay" family lived.
I would also love to gather more info on my mother-in-laws family.

If anyone out there knows of the Gay family, can do birth searches, a marriage search on Isabella and James - it would be greatly appreciated.

James and Isabella were married in 1920 on 2nd July at Chalmers Street, Edinburgh.  His occupation was Rubberworker and Isabella’s is also listed as Rubberworker.  He is aged 20 and a bachelor.  She is aged 19 and a spinster.  James’ parents are
Alexander Gray and Caroline Welsh (both still alive at the time of the marriage) and Isabella’s parents are Alexander Shearer and Sofia Begg (also alive).  Witnesses are George Gay and Maggie McAlone (I think this is what is says, as the writing is poor).

Oh, my gosh...I have heard of Alexander Gay and Caroline Welsh! Thank you so much. Where did you locate this information and living in Canada, how can I access it - would love to get more info on my husbands aunts and uncles and even his grandparents, etc?

Alexander was married in 1895 and his marriage certificate would have details of his parents.  He married in Dysart, Fife.  I have sent you a personal message.

Hello, 
I have come across your post of many years ago, but am hoping you still frequent this site.  I am researching the GAY/SHEARER families for my daughter.  James and Isabella were her great grandparents.  I was married to their grandson, Norman James GAY (who was the son of James Welsh GAY -1924-1983).  Norman passed away in 1987 and we knew very little about his family, as his mother and father divorced before our marriage and his mother died two years after we were married. 
James Welsh GAY was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, and his father, Alexander, was born in Pittenweem, Fife.  I have a bit of information, including photos of James and Isabella, which I would be happy to share.  James and Isabella's son, James Welsh GAY married Mary Jane DUGUID, and the DUGUID family is where I have hit a wall - I would appreciate any information you may have.

It's Tara Mcskimming-McFadyen. I have previously used Figureskatingmom as my ID tag, but had some major issues with that e-mail that couldn't be fixed. I have seen that, through various posts you have made some great head way on your search.
I don't have anything on the Duguid's, but would be willing to share what I have on the Gays.
If the offer is still open I would love to see the picture you have of Isabella and James.
