The elusive Ebenezer Wright
« on: Tuesday 03 June 08 17:46 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am looking for record of the birth of Ebenezer Wright around 1797 in Scotland, sorry to be vague but thats all I've got!
Eb married Elizabeth Lewis 8.9.1826 in Brecon, Wales and he lived in Brecon until his death 1869 aged 72.
1841 Brecon census has him born in Ireland but 51, and 61 confirm it was indeed Scotland.
IGI
There is a marriage of an Eb Wright to Katharine Cairns 15.12.1798 in Kincardine. also same marriage but in 1799 Kincardine By Doune Perth also another same name marriage recorded in Stirling 1.12.1799. so these could possibly be his parents ???
Why would anyone leave Scotland to come to Brecon?
Any advice on where to go next with this will be greatly appreciated. (I love the idea of having a Scot in my family)  :D

Hi Shamana

The 1798 entry on IGI is a submitted entry whilst the the two other entries in 1799 are actual extract (the two entries will be for marriage/banns in the usual residences of the bride and groom).

This couple's children show on IGI starting with the birth of a James in Oct. 1800 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire. There is a birth entry showing on IGI for an Ebenezer Wright in Falkirk, Stirlingshire in 1775 with a father James which could well be this Ebenezer's entry.

If your Ebenezer shows a birth year c. 1797, not sure if this would connect to this couple.

Hey thanks for explaining the reasons for the multiple entries. I think my only way forward (forward?) is to go back and glean everything I can from his life in Brecon and hope it throws up some clues. :) Still any ideas, thoughts will be gratefully received :)

I think that would be a good way to proceed. There is no birth showing on the OPRs in Scotland that connects to Ebenezar unfortunately.

Have you considered looking up the OPR entries that Carol found for you on www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,307686.0.html. You might be lucky and find some personal info on Ebenezar on these. The three below are from the IGI, you would probably find the rest if the registers were searched:

THOMAS WRIGHT  Christening:  22 DEC 1830
ARABELLA WRIGHT  Christening:  19 APR 1833
JOHN WRIGHT  Christening:  08 APR 1835

Have you managed to find the parents of Elizabeth, his wife? It would help in trying to determine the likely names of Ebenzar's parents if he followed Scottish naming pattern. Again, from the Welsh board, you have his 1841 census entry:

Ebenezar Wright 40 b Scotland (transcribed as Ireland but image shows S) occ labourer
Elizabeth 14
William 13
Thomas 9
Arabella 7

Given he married in 1826, you seem to have a fairly complete list of Ebenezar and Elizabeth's children. I assume she died pre 1841?

Thanks Monica, am hoping to go to Brecon soon and find his and Elizabeth's graves, they may give some more info, and yes you're right I need to search the parish registers and I will at the earliest opportunity. (oh to be able to give up work!) I am intrigued why he should go to Brecon as he doesn't seem to have been particularly skilled. :)
