Hmm...that's an idea...notice the guys are in the same outfit as well...

In Victorian photos, if a couple are touching they are either married or immediate family. This photo shows two married couples...

The photo is definitely a family portrait. This was confirmed by the daughter of the lady on the left. (she is still alive and in her 90+ years)
The family name is Maddison from left to right (Eliza, George Watson, Joseph William, Jane and their mum Mary Ann nee Watson.
I’ve double checked the births and Eliza was born in 1873, George 1862, Joseph William 1867, Jane 1865 and Mary Ann 1834.
Mary Ann died in 1904 aged 70.
My information is that it was taken at Waterhouses after the family had moved from Weardale Co Durham.

Could any one tell me what the object is that the lady in the first photo has in her hand?
