Scanning - Photo restore

I have been trying, slowly, to restore my great grandfathers photo of when he was a young lad.
I can see that some more practise and skills are required from the photos I have seen restored on here.  :o
If anyone would like to help me restore this photo as I am having difficulty, mainly with the instrument as you can see from the attached photos. My before and after.

Not much help but better than nowt.
If you think this miught help I will have another go in high res and try to do a better job.

Second post as near as I can find.
You could cut in the bits from the orignal to match the middle pipework
