William HOOD - Mayor of Reading

Hi,
It has come to my attention that my gggrandfathers brother William Hood was the Mayor of Reading between 1876-77. He died in Reading on the 25.10.1892. Two things I would like to ascertain. Is it possible to find out if William is buried in Reading, with the possibility of a gravestone. Secondly do you think that as he was Mayor there may be some form of local paper announcing his appointment and or some form of obiturary as he was Mayor. Any help would be most welcome.

It is extremely likely that he features in numerous newspaper articles, certainly when he is elected as mayor but also in reports of council elections and council meetings in his years as a councillor. It is also likely that he merited an obituary.

You will need to visit Reading or Colindale (or get someone to visit on your behalf) to peruse the papers

If he was buried in Reading it would probably been at the London Road cemetery - Reading council's cemetery people whould be able to tell you for sure.

Hi I have the Hoods in our family tree since Eliza Hood married Henry Whitbread Walker my great great grandfather. I understand that William Hood was one of 3 children born to Joseph Hood and Sophia Billingham. William hood had two brothers Samuel ( b. 1804 d 1900) and Edward Brettle Hood (b1821 d 1893). I have been adding these people to an online tree on Geni recently. Hope this is helpful.

Hello John,
The Berks FHS Burial Index has your William Hood buried in the consecrated area of the London Road Cemetery. He was age 83 and was of Hulme Villas Oxford Rd.
It looks like his wife, Elizabeth age 81 from the same address was also buried there on 4th Nov 1890.

For other information you will need to get hold of the Cemeteries and Crematoria  people of Reading Borough Council.  Unfortunately, although on their website they tell you to do this, they don't give any contact addresses.
