Try as I might and using every variation for Thirlwall I can think of I just cannot find them in 1881.

Would anyone like to give it a try for me ? Please tell me if you want any further info.

Cant help. Have you got birth cert for Albert William Thirlwall 1878
Chorlton Lancashire vol 8c page 876
or his wedding cert 1898 for Albert William Thirlwall,
Chorlton Lancashire Vol 8c page 947 ?
They may provide more information on his father,Philip.
