Bentley -Thomas Albert Baynes c 1880
« on: Thursday 29 May 08 10:07 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace the birth and death of a Thomas Albert Baynes Bentley. He married Ellen Cowan in Sept 1906 in Chorlton and they had a son John William Baynes Bentley born 23//1907 in Pately Bridge, Harrogate.
Any help would be very welcome.

Hi Lynne,

Is the birth year 1880 based on a pure guess or do you have a source for this?

I'm asking because I can see only one Baynes/Bentley marriage:
Dec 1887 Leeds 9b 705
John William Bentley - Sarah Baynes

Just a year earlier, there's this birth:
Thomas Albert Baynes
Dec 1886  Leeds 9b  532

and this could be the family in 1891:
RG12/3509 32 15
Hartwith, Yorkshire (Pateley Bridge Registration district)
New York
High Row n°13

John W Bentley, head, 28, (something) Dresser, b. Bishopside
Sarah A, wife, 27, b. Scotton
Thomas A, son, 4, b. Kirkstall

Really not sure he's your man!  :P
"My dear, I think the English pronounce it 'appiness"

I'm afraid of no ghost

The date of birth for Thomas was just a guess based on his date of marriage - thanks for your help this looks quite hopeful.

Hi, I hope this reaches you.
May I ask what relation you are to Thomas Albert Baynes Bentley? The reason I ask is because he is my great-grandfather. I have quite a lot of information already on him.
He was born approximately Dec 1886 as Thomas Albert Baynes in Leeds: I have made the assumption that he was born before his parents married and therefore took his mother's name, Sarah Ann Baynes, originally and then when they married, they added the Bentley on to the end because none of the family before him has the name Baynes Bentley. He married Ellen Cowan in Sept 1906 in Chorlton, as you mentioned, but I am struggling a little to find when he died. In the 1901 Census he is listed there as Albert Bentley.
My grandfather is John William Baynes Bentley, born 23 Feb 1907 in Pateley Bridge, married Kathleen May Browett on 2 Sept 1943 in Oakham, Rutland and died 18 Sept 1962 in Oakham.
He also had a first wife, Rosina Flowers and a child, Irene, married Sept 1939 in Hammersmith, but unfortunately they died in the First World War.
I would be really grateful if you would respond as you seem to be the first person I have come across which seems to be related and still alive!
 :)

Hi Ellie,

Its Lynne Maclean - do you remember me offering to help when you said you were doing your tree? I joined in my maiden name (Dykes) so you probably didn't recognise it.
I've only just found the last post - hope you are making progress with your tree!

Hi Lynne, my memory is like a sieve, i'm sorry. i have spoken to so many people. i hope you don't take offence. i haven't done anything to my tree for a long time so most of my contacts have disappeared!

Would love to cross reference stuff again because I do have a lot more information now.
