Is there anyway to get more info from this?
« on: Wednesday 28 May 08 21:39 BST (UK) »
Hello all
I have been working on a different branch of the family and hit that yucky brick wall thing.

I'm looking for Joseph Cook b. 1884 m. in Du-Bois, PA, USA 23 Nov 1910
d. in the USA 21 Dec 1924. his wife is Annie Beal
His father James Cook and mother Harriet.

Really have no idea where in England he was but I seem to remember that he was from the same place she was, Yorkshire. I found this one.
Is there anyway to find his parent. It seems if I buy every Joseph Cook birth certificate, I find I will go broke fast. :)

~~~~~~~~
Births Dec 1885   (>99%)
~~~~~~~~

Cook  Joseph    Pontefract  9c 111

Thank you for any help
Bonnie

Hi Bonnie  :)

A good idea is to check the 1891 England census for a Joseph COOK with parents James and Harriet.  There's one at ref: RG12/3874/21/1

He was born about 1885 in Cowick, Yorkshire, and the family lives at Beevers Bridge, Cowick.  Father James is a General Labourer born Cowick around 1862, and mum Harriet was born Rawcliffe around 1863.  Siblings are Hannah, Sarah, Edith and Walter.

Hope that helps  :D

Cheers
Prue

Thank you it seems to fit.  I think I will get the death certificate to see if it had more info to cross check.  Your help was very good. :)
Thank You very much.

If you notice this. Would you check the 1891 census a couple of houses either side of the Cook family to see if Thomas Beal is a neighbours. In 1901 they are. In 1901 Census RG13/4425/23/1 They live next door to each other. It looks like He married the girl next door. Thanks for checking.

Wow thanks Lee.
By todays standers they all lived close together. I have to stop and think about how it might have been to get around back then. Foot power mostly I guess.  Finding the Cook and Beal family so close together in 1901 was like the sun came up. My mine raced about how Grandma and Granddad met and all that. :)
Thanks again Lee

Bonnie, great that you seem to have an answer there  and that's real progress.

May I suggest that the rule of looking up and down the street at the neighbours and then branching out a bit to surrounding streets etc can often be very productive.  Check out the neighbours.  Another thing I've learned from reading abt 19th C England in the porrer parts of town is that people often moved house within their area- maybe to get a cheaper rent, maybe to try to avoid a landlord to whom they owed money- flitting at night, maybe to get premises closer to a new job- probably a factory of mill and so on.

Good hunting,
charlotte

Thanks to all for all your great help.
I have been able to trace Granddad Joseph Cook to his father James Cook.  I have James in 1891 and 1881 census. I fine 1871 census,  he is a 10 year old son  born Cowick Yorkshie, registration district Goole, Sub. Reg. distract  Snaith, ED 2 Household schedule number 27.

Now I need to see the others in the household. Would someone check and let me know who else is listed? I have also found a birth registration for James Cook it says 1861 Jun Goole 9c 539. It would be great to find the next generation back.

Thanks again for all your help.
