Getting Army Records
« on: Wednesday 28 May 08 17:06 BST (UK) »
I was wondering how to go about getting military records for someone who was discharged from teh US Army in 1897. I have his discharge papers, but want to get the rest of his records, and can't seem to find online how to obtain them. Thanks a lot.

Thanks Annie. Been looking around and I think I can get i. I have his discharge papers, well actually a reprint of them that his wife got after he died, trying to get a pension I think.

My solder is John Thomas Davis, born 1874 in Orange New Jersey. He enlisted March 10, 1894 in Newark, and was honorably discharged of his own accord June 9, 1897 from Fort Porter, NY.

Hi KathMc - I found the enlistment and discharge records of your John T. Davis on Ancestry.Com, specificly at:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&rank=1&gsfn=John+Thomas&gsln=Davis&=&rg_fa25__date=1874&rs_fa25__date=0&f18=&f21=New+Jersey&f22=&f20=&f24=&rg_f19__date=&rs_f19__date=0&gskw=&prox=1&db=usarmyenlistments&ti=0&ti.si=0&gss=angs-d&pcat=39&fh=0&recid=308091&recoff=1+2+3

You'll find him listed in the  records "U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914"

Best Wishes

Thanks guys. Both the right guy. We do have his discharge papers. My cousin was hoping if we got the actual records they'd have something about his father, but the army told her there wouldn't be much in them, and it'd cost $50 to get them. His father is a real brickwall and thorn in our side. He apparently married and had children, but was never born or died.   >:(

I appreciate the lookups. Thanks a lot.

Annie,

That would be fun, but at this point, probably not in the near future. It would be great to see them, but I know I won't find anything new in them. John T was an open book. His father on the other hand. Back to the drawing board.
