Matthew ARMSTRONG Durham Light Infantry
« on: Wednesday 28 May 08 12:11 BST (UK) »
I have 2 ARMSTRONG brothers of my grandmother.  Edward bn 1888 and Matthew bn 1896 Trimdon.  I know that Edward lived at Windsor Castle in the 1950's.

I thought I would trace Mathew's career in the Army first as I have received his marriage certificate, and to my surprise his occupation is Sergeant in the 5th Durham Light Infantry.  His Address is Cadet Company North Camp Ripon.  He married 26 January 1918.

I emailed the Durham Archivist and he was on the Absent Voters List in 1918, his Number was 200856.  His brother Edward is not on there!

How do I find him in the Medal Cards in the National Archives?  I presume he is a Sergeant and would he have this Number please?  Or how do I find his Army Record altogether?

Matthew was commissioned as a 2nd Lt so his Service Record could well be at The NA as a lot of officers records survive. :)

Iria

This is absolutely wonderful I have just returned from shopping and found your email.  I will have to get his full career now with Ancestry.  I have just printed this out!!

It looks as though his brother was in the Coldstream Guards as he lived at Windsor in the 1950's.  I was trying to research Edward, and I have written to the Archivist in London to see if they might be able to help with researching him.  I had no idea that Mathew was in the Army as long as this!

Thank you very very much, I can't thank you enough.

Hello Noreen,

I found one possible for Matthew's service record at Kew, but there is no way of confirming it without visiting Kew. There may also be others.
The catalogue reference is WO 374/2247. Below is the link to the catalogue entry

This is the guide on researching officers at the NA:

Phil

Thank you for this advice, it is the first time I have researched the army.

I emailed the National Archives after getting this information from Iria, asking how to proceed.  You have probably given me the same advice they would have given me - when they eventually reply to me!

Thank you all

Noreen
