James Jeffery Royce
« on: Wednesday 28 May 08 01:48 BST (UK) »
Hi All
This is my first post here so forgive me if I am not doing this right!

I am trying to solve the mystery of my great grandfather, his birth, his parents etc

According to family "history" (ie what people remember) he was born on 4th May 1897. He married Elizabeth Braxton in 1922 (I have the marriage certificate) and his father is listed as Thomas Royce, an engineer, deceased. Again, according to what my grandmother can remember she thinks he said his father worked in South Africa.

I can't find out who his mother was or where he was born. Or if he had any brothers and sisters.

There may be some connection with Hay on Wye or with Eardingly (sp?) in Herefordshire. Apparently he had a benefactress. There may be a Worthing connection.

Now, apart from the fact that he married my great grandmother, we know he ran a company in the 1940s making furnesses and he was listed as a stained glass maker when he got married. He was a skilled man and greatly respected in his profession (we have an obituary which lists his achievements from about 1940) but none of this answers the questions of his birth.

My Gran is now 84 and currently is feeling guilty that she didn't ask him anything about his birth or parents. She never met them. She also thinks he father made it all up, saw the name Royce and thought it would be a great name for a would be engineer!!!! It would be nice to solve the mystery and obviously time (although my Gran is in good health!) is not on our side.

Finally, my great grandfather had a raised shoe which presumably supported a damaged leg. It might have been a war wound but more likely some kind of illness. He didn't limp on it at all so we assume he must have grown up with it.

He was quite a character - he stormed out of his house aged 80 and got on a bus from Farindgon to Hertfordshire, claiming he had left my great grandmother because she thought he was having an affair with the local bar maid. He then laid our patio before returning home (to his wife - not the barmaid!)

I hope someone can help...

Hi Cath!

I second mab's welcome to Rootschat and hope you will find lots of help here!

This is an obvious question, but you didn't say - I presume you have checked the bmd indexes for your ggrandfather's birth?  It should be easy to find if it is there, as you think you know his date of birth.  If you are a real beginner, I suggest that you check the Beginners' Board and Resources here on Rootschat.

If he doesn't appear on the indexes, he may have been born in South Africa if as you say his father worked there.  I'm not sure how you access South African bmd resources but you could do a bit of Googling.  If he changed his name, as your grandmother thinks he may have, it will be extremely difficult to find him!   :( :'(

Hi
Yes I do have an Ancestry family tree under the name of Trodd (tree owner Cath138) (also another one with Trodd/Royce/Payne/Seager as its title but that one is all wrong!!!) On it I have plotted the assumption that James Royce was the child of the Thomas Royce in gaol at the time of the 1901 census to see if I could tap into another generation / relative that might have been housing him.

I have checked the BMD register but I will double check in a moment.

All advice or cunning plans gratefully received!

Cath

The reason I asked about the tree is that when I did an advanced search....James Royce born 1897 England....I saw that some one has a  "Personal Member Photo" with a description of "James Royce Electric Furnace Ltd".  So that must be yours then.... ;D

Yeah - that's me!

It's not going to be a straight forward solution this one - I suppose I am hoping that someone will stumble across a typo or an institution record and remember the name and this post...

Here's hoping!

Hi Cath

I know this thread is very old now, but James Royce is my wife's grandfather.  The details you give agree with what I know, but I am about to get a death certificate for James Geoffrey Royce, b 04 May 1897. The death details are:
Wantage Q3 1983, vol 20, p.2521.

Any information that you may have would be gratefully received, and I will reciprocate where I can.

All the best

Rich
