Brettells(Brettles) and Kilburns and Wyatts
« on: Wednesday 28 May 08 01:16 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm researching my family tree and have a Minnie Brettell that maried a William Kilburn in 1913. These are my Great Grandparents.

I'm trying to find out more information about either side of the family and was wondering if anyone could help...

I think Williams father was Arthur Tully/Pully Kilburn and was married to a Florence but that's as high up I can go on that side of the family....

However with the Brettells I have got a little further.

Minnies parent wher eJohn and Elizabeth Brettell, John's parents Rhoda(Roda) Cartwright and Charles Brettell and Charles parents Samuel and Hannah Brettell... Well thats what I think I may be wrong....

I'm after anything anyone can give me... I would love photos as I've not got any apart from Minnie and William. I would also like to be in contact with any living relative. I know Minnies sibling married and have their details and my Mother confirmed those names for me.

Also a John Hugh Wyatt is a nother person I'm looking for informaiton on he's my Grandfather he was married to Minnie and William Kilburns daughter Enid. Unfortunately during the war Enid and John divorced and the family lost touch with John... Would love to know if anoyone could help me found out what happened to him.

Keren

Hi Keren,

Welcome to Rootschat!   :D

It might help if you were to get your gt.grandparents' marriage certificate to be absolutely sure of William Kilburn's age and occupation and his father's name and occupation.
Then we could help by finding them in the 1901 census and earlier

The marriage GRO reference is  Dec quarter 1913 Darlington    10a   93
Kilburn    William and  Brettell  Minnie if you want to order it through the GRO, or you can order it online from Darlington register office at http://www.darlington.gov.uk/Living/Register+Office/RegOfficeSearch.htm
There is no birth listed on that site for William though, have you any idea where he was born?

freebmd also has this marriage

Jun 1862  Auckland 10a   201
KILBURN    William Byers    and on same page TULLY    Mary

This family is on the 1881 census at RG11/4926  Folio  28  Page  50 which is free to view on ancestry or findmypast or famlysearch
William Byers Kilburn is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons.

Arthur is not with the family, I think he's boarding at the Grammar School at Appleby in Westmorland, indexed under Arthur T. MILBURN f: RG11/5198  Folio  13  Page  19.

Hope this helps, although you probably do need that marriage certificate to be sure this is the correct family

Hi Barbara

Thank-you ever so much for the information you have posted for me it's been sincerely appreciated.... You have been so very helpful... As I live in NZ the internet is my only source in researching the family tree and with people like yourself being so kind and helpful in passing on useful information and pointing me in the right direction....

Hi Keren,

You're welcome  :)

This looks like Florence in West Auckland in 1881 with parents John (a farmer) & Elizabeth - again this is free-to-view on ancestry or familysearch etc
RG11/4926 Folio  72  Page  75

and same family in 1871:

1871 RG10/4887  Folio  32  Page  1
School Aycliffe, Durham
BARLOW
John          head m 41 Farmer of 120 acres  Stapyleton Yorkshire
Elizabeth   wife   m 40 Farmer's wife           Gilling Yorkshire
Margaret    dau       19      "        dau           Darlington Durham
Anne             "         17      "         "              Westerton    "
William        son       15  Scholar                  Darlington
Sarah          dau      12       "                        Coundon
Paull           son       10       "                        Merrington
James            "          8       "                        School Aycliffe
Elizabeth    dau         7       "                              "
John           son         5       "                               "
Joseph          "           3
Florance     dau     11 months                             "

I'll leave both families there until you get William & Minnie's marriage certificate to confirm parents, please do come back with the details and then we can go further back.

I see you have another post asking about John Wyatt, mentioned in your first post, it might be as well to make a new separate post about the Brettell/Cartwright families and keep this one for the Kilburn/Barlows to avoid any confusion - if you post details of what you've already found out about them it will save any duplication of searches

Kind regards, Barbara

 :)
