WILSON James - Thursby
« on: Tuesday 27 May 08 21:28 BST (UK) »
Hi There
Am looking for any leads on the birth/parents &/or death of a James WILSON, born abt 1806 in Thursby, Cumberland.
He married Ann REAY 10th November 1832 in Holme Cultram and have been able to follow the family through census' where James appears to have died sometime between 1861 & 1871.
Address at 1861 census was Cardew.
Any help really appreciated.

Following on from my initial enquiry, if James was born in Thursby could anyone tell me what parish would I look at in the Bishop's Transcripts?
I've looked in Wigton but can't see anything that relates. I've found James & Ann's marriage in Holme Cultram but that doesn't list parents.
In the 1861 census, he is listed as being born in Stogenwarth (??) but Thursby in the 1841 census. Are these two places near to each other?
One again, any help really appreciated, as this man (my husband's GGgrandfather) is a real mystery prior to his marriage.
Cheers
Annie

Thursby is IGI batch C058731 ... it seems to have no WILSONs around the time you are interested.

The only place in the vicinity likely to be transcribed as Stogenwarth seems to be Stonethwaite.

There is another possibility for "Stogenwarth".  There is a very small village south of the village of Dalston called Stockdalewath, which is usually pronounced "stogglewath".   If the person taking the census was not familiar with the area it would be an easy mistake to make.

I'm not sure which parish, but it could be Dalston, Raughton Head, Castle Sowerby or Highhead.

As the crow flies it is about 5 miles from Thursby, so not too far away.

It's just an idea - hope it helps

Sounds good! ;)

I see that place is very close to Gaitsgill ... a James WILSON was bap at Raughton Head with Gaitsgill in 1803, son of Matthew and Mary.  I see your James had kids with those names.

Thank you all so much for those leads... I at least now have some possibilities.
The Mathew & Mary Wilson angle looks promising.
Can anyone tell me what info would be contained in UK death certs for the 1860's?
I have several possible deaths and if the spouse and father's names are listed it would be one way to corroborate his parentage.
Could I be so lucky??!!

You won't get the info you are looking for as a matter of course.

The only names will be
1) deceased - "wife of ..." or "widow of ..." if it's a woman.
2) informant - that will give "relationship to deceased" (but need not be related)
3) registrar
4) a doctor may certify the cause of death.

Once again thanks for that info
I think the birth in Gaitsgill is worth following up & I've found out that Raughton Hill with Gaitsgill is covered by Dalston parish...can anyone tell me if there are any BT's for this parish please?
Cheers

Did you find the parents of James Wilson in Thursby circa 1806? If not, there are a few Wilsons on the Thursby gravestones who would have been there at the right time - I have transcriptions of the stones if you would like them.
