1861 & 1871 Southwark Rate Book

Hi all

Just wondered if anyone has access to the 1861 Rate Payers Book for Tooley Street in Southwark and would mind having a look for me at number 91.

I have just heard from Southwark local studies group, that my Gx4 Grandfather who was a Fishmonger at the time and lived at 91 Tooley St, was more than likely to have lived over his own shop!!  They also advised that the Rate Book would show information about him and the premises.

In 1871 he lived at 195 Central Street, Southwark, same profession.

I would be very grateful if anyone has this information for either address and would be willing to share it with me and thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Have you got him in the censuses for those years? That would possibly indicate if he lived over a shop and would give details of his family with him.
If you want help to find him in census, we will need his name and age!

OK it doesnt actaully say he is living over a shop - but he is a fishmonger and given that his neighbours are a baker, an ironmonger, a grocer ...etc I would guess it is a row of shops!

Do you want a list of what family is there?

I have him in both the 1861 and 1871 census returns, the info given on them is James Harvey born abt 1826 Fishmonger and the two addresses, respectively.

It was just a suggestion by a local studies group that if I could somehow get information regarding the rate payer for his address, (the site would have been a shop with a dwelling above) I might be able to find out if he had a fishmongers shop or not and also that the rate payers book would contain more information regarding the property itself and possibly about my gx4 grandfather.

Just saw your other post, thank you for looking, really any help is brilliant, I was just trying to clear up as to whether he had a shop or not and maybe what it might have been called etc.  I am looking down this route as tracing him backwards at the moment is proving very difficult, so am trying to find any clues that might help in facilitating further research of the family.

Did your local studies group say who holds this book?

Have you tried the London Metropolitan Archives?
Or Surrey History Centre at Woking, who have Surrey records.

I know that it is Southwark local studies Library where it would be held, but I am unable to get there at all.  A friend suggested someone may have a copy of it and that I should ask on here just in case.

I have searched online to see if I could find come sort of transcription of it but have not come up with anything.

1861 looks like he is 25 - though you have him as 35.
Given tha he has a 9 yr old son, then 35 is more likely

I cant locate a marriage at present, maybe you already have it.

I do have his marriage, although it gets complicated at that point lol.  The marriage is listed under Wills although it is actually Wells (the family name is in fact Harveywells) and his name is actually Henry although he uses James.

I am going to go back over my other information tomorrow and recheck everything see if there was something I missed.  Just thought that since I was advised to try and get hold of the rate book, I would give it a go.
