Malvern Ladies College
« on: Monday 26 May 08 19:41 BST (UK) »
Has anyone any idea where Malvern Ladies College, Valetta Street is? My grandmother attended this school in 1890/1, maybe before these dates and maybe after. I have books given to her as prizes in 1890/1. My grandmother lived in Manchester but that isn't to say that she wasn't sent off to boarding school in the Malvern area. I have tried 'google' and 'streetmap' but neither have been any real help. Valetta Street doesn't seem to exist now.

Hi

If you would post details of your grandmother, we may be able to find her on the 1891 census - possibly at the school

We need her full name, birthyear and birthplace

I've looked on the Godfrey map street index booklets for Valetta St and couldn't find one - although there is a Malvern St in the Old Trafford/Hulme area with a church and school nearby.

There was a Malvern Girl's College in Mavern but it doesn't appear to have been opened until 1893. One of the two ladies who opened it was there at the school on 1901 census. In 1891 she is at the same address but living with her parents.  So it doesn't appear to be the same school.

Do you have your grandmother in any of the census returns?  Was she definitely in the UK?  There are a couple of Valetta Streets poping up in Australia - no Malvern Ladies College found yet though.

It's a mystery ???

Hiya

Searching for answers online and this came up!
Probably not yours as this college was in Australia, but what a coincidence on the address and dates! (Sorry Milly just noticed you picked that up too!) :P

Korowa Anglican Girls' School was established in 1890, first in two houses in Valetta Street, Malvern and then in an old house in Pine Grove. In 1900 the school moved again, this time to a two storey house in Wattletree Road. The school was registered as "School No.5" in 1906.[11]

Hi Su,

Yes that's the Australian Valetta Street I was thnking of.  Couldn't find a mention of The Malvern Ladies College though but perhaps a bit more digging might uncover it.

Until we receive a reply I don't see any way we can help further

You are all fantastic !!  It had never occurred to me that Malvern Ladies College was in Australia. It seemed so English and I had found an 1891 census return that matched my grandmother(at least I thought I had -  there must be another Eleanor Bradshaw of the same age and same place of birth).
Eleanor and family emmigrated to Australia in 1885 and lived in Melbourne. Is Valetta Street in Melbourne? I had rather foolishly thought that the family must have returned to England for a few years before returning to Australia.
Thank you all very much.

Hi Carol,

We thought you had disappeared there for a bit ;D ;D

There is a Valetta St in Melbourne, and there was a school there, and it appears to be linked to Malvern...so lots of clues to follow up

It's not the Malvern Ladies College but you may have more luck digging around the area in Australia rather than the UK
