1841 Yeovil PALMER
« on: Tuesday 06 April 04 16:46 BST (UK) »
Only if it is easy (indexed or CD) could sks look up a family in the Yeovil area for me on the 1841 census.

In 1851 they are on the Stoke sub Hamdon census but it appears their older children are born in Yeovil - I've extrapolated what I would expect to see on the 1841 census.

John Palmer age 26 glove cutter (born in county, Stoke sub Hamdon)
Elizabeth Palmer age 21 glove sewer (born in county, Stoke sub Hamdon)
Elizabeth Palmer age 3 (born in county, Yeovil)

The next child may or maynot be listed...

James Palmer age ?months (born in county, Yeovil)

Cheers,
Pam

Hi Pam:

I am looking for a Palmer family in England...know little, only that they lived in "the south of England' and emigrated to Canada in 1856.

The dates you extrapolate for 1841 seem to fit MY family very closely.

John...born 1814    wife: Elizabeth born 1820,
(I don't have  an Elizabeth...she may have died young?)
William, born 1839,  and James....mine is born in 1844.

This family moved to Canada and had two more children: Henry and Mary Ann.

Its a long shot...I just wondered...Harpham.. in Canada

Hi Pam,

A slight problem with the 1841 at the library :-\

It's not indexed, so I looked through the whole of Yeovil on microfilm and most of the copy is just about readable, but unfortunately there are whole pages that are pretty much invisible and just impossible to read.

I couldn't find your Palmers on the readable pages and in a final act of desperation I searched the 1841 for Stoke sub Hamdon (Stoke under Hamdon as it was then),more readable, but still I couldn't find your Palmers :(

I did make a list of all the Palmers that I found there just in case they might belong to you somewhere down the line.

1841 Census of Stoke Sub Hamdon

Whirly Gog Lane.

Samuel Palmer,40,Leather parer,b.in county
Elizabeth Palmer,40,glove sewer,b.in county
John Palmer,20,Leather parer,b.in county
Lewis Palmer,15,stone masons apprentice,b.in county

Lower North Street

Joan Palmer,65,ag.lab,b.in county

Ann Palmer,60,labourer,b.in county

--------------------------------------------

William Palmer,30,Lawyer,b.in county

Maria Palmer,45,b.in county

George Palmer,13,ag.lab,b.in county

Mary Palmer,11,glove sewer,b.in county

---------------------------------------------

Stones Lane

Hannah Palmer,60,Labourer,b.in county

----------------------------------------------

Stones Lane

Samuel Palmer,25,ag.lab,b.in county

Harriet Palmer,25,glove sewer,b.in county

Angelina Palmer,5,b.in county

Benjamin Palmer,3,b.in county

-----------------------------------------------

Castle Street

Henry Palmer,20,Stone cutter,b.in county

That's it for the Palmers on the 1841,there is a name variation though that you might be interested in 'Palmour',there seems to be a lot of them in Stoke S H.

Sorry that I couldn't find your Palmers, good luck with the rest of your search,

Best wishes,Mick ;)

Eek we have something odd going on here.

My original post was made in Somerset I think with all the tidying up it has moved - probably did that myself  :-\

Harpham,

Sorry to disappoint but I know how this family ended up and it is an estrangement with John dying in Glastonbury and Elizabeth dying in either Stoke sub Hamdon or South Petherton.

Mick,

Hugely kind, thank you.  I do have a transcript of all Stoke sub Hamden records census, & BMD, but it is always good to have confirmation on the info I have.  Most of these are related, the Palmours too.

I'm convinced my Palmer directs are in Yeovil due to births but they could be elsewhere.

Thanks again and I have moved the post!
