LEGGETT/SCRUTTON - Where From Here?
« on: Thursday 22 May 08 14:48 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate any help, suggestions or look-ups anyone can provide to help me get back another generation with this line of my Mothers maiden name.
This is what I have;

John Leggett, born 1793 Wenhaston , Suffolk, died 1873, Beccles.

Honor Scrutton, born 1783, Holton and died 1858 Beccles

They married 20 August 1817, Holton by Halesworth( the entry on Pallots index has his name listed as John LEGGATE)

Children;
Elizabeth 1820,  born Halesworth
Joseph     1826    "           "   chr. March

Abigale     1826   Beccles  chr. Dec

William      1822  Stratford, Essex
Mary Ann   1824  Stratford, Essex

Willam ( 1822) is my line, and I wonder why he and Mary were born in Essex, maybe they moved there and then back to Suffolk, or Honor had relatives to stay with while pregnant???

I have 1841 ( under LeggOtt), 1851,1861 census entries for  John and Honor.

William Legget had a son ( surprise! William 1842) who emigrated to New Zealand about 1870.

Thanks,
Trish

Hi
You have to be careful with Stratford. That part of London that is now called Stratford (and forms part of the London Borough of Newham) was indeed a parish included in the county of Essex.
In Suffolk there are 2 parishes with Stratford in the name: Stratford St Mary and Stratford St Andrew
Have you proved that William and Mary Ann were born or baptised in the Essex Stratford and not in either of the Suffolk ones?

Hi Clincher,

No, I have not proved it.
The early infomation of the Leggett family was provided to me by Leggett Family History researcher. I have proof of the Leggetts from my mother back to William Leggett/Mary Ann Newby marriage in 1841. But his Father being John and birth etc. was provided to me.

It is early in the morning here in Australia and I have to go to work so if there are any othr postings here  I wil not be able to reply till late tonight.

Thank you for your interest.
Trish

Wenhaston, Holton St Peter (or 'by Halesworth' as it is an adjacent parish to the market town of Halesworth), Beccles are all in similar area in north-north east Suffolk.

Nearest Stratford would be Stratford St Andrew.

Where we have more than one parish of the same name, it usually has the name of the parish church included to show the difference.
Holton St Mary and Stratford St Mary are much further south, they are not too far from the Essex/Suffolk border.

SM ...
Every time I find an ancestor,
I have to find two more!

Thanks SM,

That gave me a better idea of the situation of the various areas.

Maybe I did not word my posting correctly, but what I am trying to find is any extra info.  on John Leggett and Honor Scrutton, parents etc. Should I repost as a Look-up??
Sorry, but am a little new to this.

Trish

Looking at the Census and NBI think I may have found parents of John.

There only appeared to be one Leggett family at Wenhaston and in 1841/51 there is just a James and wife Ann.   James is shown as bc.1790 Cratfield.   The NBI includes a Samuel Leggate bur.20/4/1836 Wenhaston aged 83 i.e. bc.1753.   There is also a James Leggett bur.10/12/1852 Wenhaston aged 62 i.e. bc.1790, who is the one I found on the census.   An Elizabeth Legget was bur.20/12/1829 Wenhaston aged 70 i.e. bc.1759.

I then checked the IGI and found that the James who was born Cratfield and living in Wenhaston was a son of Samuel Leggat and Elizabeth Barker and bp.18/4/1789 Cratfield.   Samuel and Elizabeth married at Cratfield 15/11/1781.   3 other children bp'd Cratfield are Jane 26/10/1783, Sarah 7/12/1784, and Mary 4/2/1788.   They then appear to disappear from Cratfield records and no burials for Samuel and Elizabeth there.   Looks like they were the ones who went to Wenhaston where further children could have been born including your John bc.1793.   As you no doubt already know, there are no online records for Wenhaston for this time frame.

Tried to apply these same principles for Honour Scrutton but no obvious scenario emerges I'm afraid.   More than one couple having children at Holton in the relevant time frame.

Hope this helps.

Hi Annette,

Thank you very much- you are amazing!!!

I will take all the info on board but am pretty sure you are onto the right family. Most of the names also are the same as members of the Leggetts born in N.Z. 1870-1920 through 2 generations. My mothers father was a James Leggett ( 1872-1929)

Thank you again and I will see where this takes me. Hope to visit England within the next year or so.

Stratford (in Essex once upon a time but now part of East London) has a number of parishes but the earliest C of E baptisms in that area took place only from 1834 at Stratford, St John.
It occurred to me that the parishes of Stratford were carved out of the mother parish of West Ham, All Saints. So, with the help of an index in the Thames Riverside parish index series Vol 30 All Saints West Ham (Essex RO ref T/Z 542/2)  I looked up the indexes for baptisms, marriages and burials 1813-1835. There were 3 baptism entries for Legget(only one t) and the index led me to the parish register as follows:
Essex RO ref West Ham All Saints D/P 256/1/6 fiche 3 of 7
page 353 consecutive entries 2777-2779 on
1824 Jul 4
Elizabeth d of John and Honor born 12 Dec 1819 (the index referred to above says '1814' but I believe it has been mis-read)
Mary Ann d of John and Honor born 30 Sep 1824
William s of John and Honor born 5 Sep 1821
The abode was given as Stratford and occupation was gardener
