Hi Chris

Noticed your message - I have an interest in the Cockbain family who were stone masons in the Bigrigg/ Bankend area.

I have a small interest in the Cockbains of the Whitehaven area.

Ruth Cockbain Cowan married my 1st cousin 3 times removed George Pickering in 1875. Her grandmother was Ruth Cockbain, born c1800 at St. Bees. An entry on the IGI shows a baptism at St Bees in 1799, daughter of John & Isabel.

My Pickerings were also stonemasons in the area. My gggg grandfather William Pickering was at Bankend in 1793 when my ggg gf was christened. The cottages there still survive.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Hi Andrew

Great to hear from you.
It's getting late here in Aus. but sounds promising...
Luke Cockbain (son of Henry and Suzannah Peat born Dalston 1765) was living Bankend by 1794.

We have a busy day tomorrow but  tomorrow evening I'll get back to you with more info. about Luke, his family and Bankend.

Linda

Our ancestors were living only a few yards apart then. William Pickering was baptised on Christmas Day 1793, and your Cockbains were there before 1794. Doesn't leave a big gap where they could have missed each other!

There are only 5 houses at Bankend, and one of them belonged to the owner of the quarry.

If you PM me with an email address, I'll forward a pic of the cottages.

Bank End, Bigrigg - Doloughan
« Reply #7 on: Tuesday 02 March 10 19:13 GMT (UK) »
Hello Andrew, I am Susan Robertson (nee Doloughan) and am looking into my family history which is very tied up with Bank End Quarry,  My g/father Henry James Doloughan owned it for a few years around 1901 but the family had lived, worked, been born and died there from the 1860's.  I am busy at the moment doing a breakdown of the census available of the families living there.  My father, Harry Doloughan was probably the last Doloughan born there in 1905.  I saw from one of your messages you had a photograph of the cottages there and would really appreciate a download if it is not too much trouble.  If you still have an interest in Bank End I can pass on info. I am busy with.
