Cheshire Birth lookup at Records Office. Please
« on: Wednesday 21 May 08 00:56 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I have found 4 William Jones born 1845 in Birkenhead on the BDM, but I don't know which one is mine. ???

The numbers are..
BIR/7/95
BIR/7/57
BIR/7/100
BIR/8/90

According to William's marriage & death certificates, his father's name was John Jones..Occupation, Shoemaker. His mothers name is unknown.

Would really appreciate if somebody could do a lookup for me please? ;D

Regards,
corsharn

Hi Corsharn

The Cheshire Records office does not have birth information. They are held at the local Register office which in Birkenhead's case would be Wirral Register Office and only the indexes are accessable to the public. Your only way to access the information on the certificate is to purchase it. I don't think the Wirral Register Office accepts credit cards so you are probably limited to applying to the GRO.

Hi Andy,
Many thanks! For the helpful information. ;D

It's a real bummer  that I have to purchase all 4 certificates. :(

Wish the UK BDM was like the BDM here in Sydney, Australia...It gives the parents names on-line, so at least you know if your looking at the correct person.

Regards,
corsharn

Hi Corsharn

You could apply to the GRO one at a time and stipulate fathers name and occupation, I think they charge 3GDP if its not correct but its cheaper than just sending for all 4 at once.

Those reference numbers you quoted are no good for the GRO, they only apply to the local office.

The references you need are

Registration District Wirral

June Qtr 1845 Vol 19 page 351
Sept Qtr 1845 Vol 19 Page 323
Sept Qtr 1845 Vol 19 Page 325
Dec Qtr 1845 Vol 19 Page 320

I would suggest you doublecheck the images to ensure page numbers are correct.

Andy

Hi Andy,
Thanks once again for all this very helpfull info. I'm learning heaps :)...This is the first time I have looked at purchasing certificates in England, so your help is invaluable. :)

I'll take your advise and check the page numbers.

Many thanks!

The link below is to ordering online from the GRO. I haven't used it for a long time but if you have any problems, sing out and someone will be able to help you.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

I'm curious as to how you know he was born in Birkenhead in 1845? I had a look at the 1851 census and couldn't find a match.

Hi Andy,
I feel like a parrot repeating thanks yet again...But thanks, yet again! ;D

I have William's marriage & death certificates, both have him born in Birkenhead....going on his age on both certificates he was born in 1845.

I have found a few William Jones on the census, with the correct fathers name and occupation, but his mother is still unclear....On his death certificate it has his mother as Martha Morris, but I don't know if this is correct as the informant was the medical superintendent...And I haven't been able to find a John Jones with a wife Martha in Birkenhead.

That's why I thought the birth certificates might help.

corsharn :)

Hi Corsharn

The problem with working backwards in calculating date of birth is that it depends upon the exact date of the events that you are calculating from. Perhaps if you detail the information you have such as dates and location of marriage and death plus any census details also any relatives you are aware of then it might be possible to identify him.
