Thanks Christopher, the associated stories give a very graphic account of the journey.

I do notice at least two transcription errors.  From my copy of the original paper from the Hocken Library at Otago University, which they provided free of charge, the entries 209 and 211 should read Ross (not Rose).  Mary Ross was my great-gandmother and John was her brother.

If you could point me towards any information on the Ross family of Barrakilla I would be very grateful.

Hi Terry,

Gidday from another 'Egidia'! My mob were the MURDOCH family (No.182 on that webpage).

The only Barrakilla I can find is in Co. Tralee IRL. You might find this post and answers of interest:

And http://www.theshipslist.com/accounts/ladyegidia.html for a breakdown of passengers by class and statistical information.

The Murdoch's settled in East Taieri OTG and farmed. The parents, John and Martha, had another two children after their arrival in NZ.

What happened to your ROSS family?

Hi Riley

John Ross took up farming at Myross Bush, Southland and it was there that in 1862 his sister Mary married my great grandfather Thomas Hanning and went on to have eight children.  They had a farm at Hedgehope in Southalnd.

Haven't yet checked up on John's descendants, if any.  Also haven't yet made the leap back into Ireland - seems like a place you need to travel to and fossic about in parish records.

The Barrakilla that the Ross family came from is in Cloyne, County Cork and not far from Rostellan where Thomas Hanning came from. - I've always wondered if they or their families knew each other.

Spent my early days in Mosgiel, so I know the Taieri plains well.

Regards, Terry

Hi Gemini

Terry will no doubt answer your question about Thomas HANNING ?

But haven't we already given you a GREAT deal of information about your HAINING and TIELLE families ?

Did you ever get the marriage certificates which might have helped with sorting out the HAINING / TIELLE mystery ?

Lu

Hi Gemini

My Thomas Hanning (my g-grandfather) arrived in New Zealand from Rostellan, co Cork, Ireland in 1861.  He may have travelled to New Zealand on a ship that sailed from Glasgow, but he was Irish to the core.

Apart from early carting to the gold diggings, he was a farmer and never in the hotel business as far as I know.

There was a scottish family of Hannings (Robert Hanning et al) who settled in the Catlins area of Southland, but they had no Thomas that I am aware of.

Sorry I cant help further,

Terry
