Hi again Adam,

Are your MI's for tombstone inscriptions only, or do they include memorials inside the church as well? (if not, do you have any idea how I might go about finding out about memorials inside the church?)

I was expecting a few more Whitfields, as I believe they were a fairly prominent family in the area in the mid to late 1700's.

Suppose it's a possiblilty that stones have since been removed, damaged or worn ....

Hello Ruskie.
I think that Whitfield House circa 1750 along with cottages on the right hand side dated 1677 and  holiday cotage on the left from the mid 18c may be connected to your family.
I will have a look in the church to see if there are any memorials to the family.
As for gravestones, I remember telling someone who had the same problem as you have with gravestone memorials in Wolsingham, that there is a house in the village with a cellar paved out in old gravestones.
Of course that will have been done a long time ago.(and they are not laid face up)
It would be interesting to know the names on the stones.

Thanks for the reply Adam. You are correct about Whitfield House which I believe was built by one of my ancestors (Matthew, if my memory serves me correctly).

I would really appreciate it if you would check inside the church (please don't go out of your way - any time is absolutely fine).

How interesting to hear about the gravestones in the cellar. I agree, it would be fascinating to see what names are on them.

Hello again. What I should also have pointed out is that there are seven or so  gravestones that are listed because of age and style but are unreadable.
Maybe the Whitfield could be among st them.

Hello Ian. The inscription for Mitchell/Maughan has a date from the 1970's(age 92)
I do not post inscriptions from after 1950 but if you want it I can post it via the personal mail.
There are a couple of other stones from the late 1800's for just the Mitchel names. Do you want those?.
