1881 census Whitby

On the 1871 there is James Winspear age 53 Hannah age 42 William Thomas aged 16 Elizabeth aged 2 living on the Cragg. I found William Thomas still on the Cragg after his marriage on the 1881 but no sign anywhere of his parents and sister.

Thanks Willow, I thought I had searched thoroughly but never thought of that spelling of Winspear. It sounds like it may be my Hannah as on her marriage cert her address was Ruswarp which is joined to Sleights.

In the 1881 census I can only find one Elizabeth about the right age

It could be she was taken in by another branch of the family if her mother is in hospital. She is definutely listed as daughter on the census

In the 1891 census we have in Stranton Durham

Susan Wray aged 60 born Widdow Ugglebarnby head
Kegia Wray aged 34 born Hackney, London daughter in law
Hannah Wray aged 1 born West Hartleypool grandson??
Henry Wray aged 7 mths born West Hartleypool grandson
William Wray aged 34 born West Hartlepool son Iron Ship Driller
William D Wray 3 aged born West Hartleypool grandson
Elizabeth Ak Winspear aged 22 born Whitby visitor

I cannot find her at all in the 1901 census but she may have married by that time so unless we can find a reference for the marriage we will not find her

The only other option is I have found a marriage reference for an Elizabeth Winspear marrying a Thomas Beeforth 3rd 1/4 1889 9d 686 and in the 1891 they are listed as him being aged 23 and she is 24 both born in Glaisdale so I am really not too sure about this one

Willow you are brilliant, I got so single minded about Whitby I never thought of Elizabeth as a visitor. It doesn't explain where she was in 1881 but in Durham on the 1891 is feasible as Hannah Winspears maiden name was Wray. Can you give me the census numbers for Hannah on the 1881 as I want to check where exactly Middle Hospital yard is as I think they are what is known now as Alms houses. They have always been for dependants of fishermen which fits for Hannah. Thanks again.

It is vessel 5, folio 91, page 13

There is another Elizabeth listed in 1881 as a servant in the household of George and Ann Taylor at Hawkers cum Stainsacre but she is listed as being 14 and being born in Lealholm Yorkshire so this might not be her especially as there is no occupation listed for her in the 1891 census

Hi there, I wonder if anyone can help me I think my Wrays may be relations as I have James Wray born 1833 Whitby, married to Hannah unknown as yet, in 1861 they are on a boat called Emily with their daughters Eliza and Laura, then in1871 in Stranton Durham, with Robert and James additional children both born in West Hartlepool, my family are from Sunderland so I presume thats where they stayed, I have found out quite a lot up to the 1900s but Im really keen on finding out Hannahs maiden name and James Wrays ancestors, I know this is a stab in the dark but any chance of anyone having these on their tree, thanks anyway and good luck in your research,

Hi,
I think we may have a connection as two of my 3XGGrandmothers brothers George and Robert Wray went to Stranton in Durham. Roberts wife was Susan Robinson and in the 1871 census James Wray had a neighbour Sarah Robinson also born in Whitby, it may just be a coincidence but I will have a dig through my stuff and see what I can find. I will get back to you soon.
