23rd Regt of Foot
« on: Sunday 18 May 08 05:03 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me where the 23rd Regt of Foot was stationed in mid 1807? before they went to Ireland. My gt gt grandfather was injured and was operated on in Chelsea Hosp in September 1807. subsequently discharged on to an outpatient pension.

The 23rd had two battalions and a Depot during this period. It seems that the 1st Battalion left England in February 1806 and did not returned until 1814. The information I have about the 2nd Battalion was that they were in Wales between 1804 and 1807, when they left for Ireland. In 1808 they were involved in the war against Napoleon, returning to England in 1809.

You will have to access the Muster and Pay Lists in Kew (WO12) to find the exact location. These were monthly musters recording the location of each man.

The Musters for the Depot will be attached to the List for one of the battalions. These are original documents and you will have to visit Kew.

Hi Yewtree, I stumbled on to this site while researching my gr gr gr grandfather, William Hobbs. Williams son Enoch (who migrated to Sth Aust) had a son Eli, who had a son Arnold (my grandfather). I was very pleased to read some of your chatter which matched my records. Would love to chat more with you about the family.  :)

Hi tjp
Thanks for the message re William Hobbs 1784-1837 of Alderton
My 2xgtgrandfather was William, his son Jesse was my gtgrandfather his son Emmanuel was my grandfather his son Elton Frederick Hobbs was my Dad, he was born 1893 in Slimbridge and married Helen May Liddington born Lydney 1898, in 1918 in Gloucester.
I am 'stuck' on William's father - John Hobbs, do you know the date and place of John's birth? he married a Betty, no further definite info on her either.
Have you got any details of Williams army career in the 23rd regiment of foot(later, I believe the Welsh Fusiliers.)
Looking forward to hearing from you and exchanging details.

Hi Both

Are you aware of this from Kew?

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=-4102261&CATLN=7&Highlight=%2CWILLIAM%2CHOBBS&accessmethod=0

The army did not record much (if anything) in the way of FH information in those days, so it probably will not help you with his father, etc.

Hi Ken
Thanks for your message re Wiliam Hobbs. I have a copy of his discharge papers from the Army also the muster roles, but I can't seem to get any more, I would like to know why and where his injury occured that led to him having a leg amputated in Sept/Oct 1807.
Unfortunately I can't get to Kew to find out more, health and distance a problem!
Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.
