help with Navy Record
« on: Wednesday 14 May 08 20:36 BST (UK) »
Hi
can anyone help l have got a copy of my great uncles navy record and understand it until 1924.  He joined in 1919 and served on various ships l know he was still in the Navy around 1945.  But his record only goes up to 1924 when its says transferred to C S l have a photo of him in uniform and on his cap it looks like HMCS the photo also looks like it could have been taken in a different country.
Thanks

CS could stand for Continuous Service engagement.( what you would sign on for)
Could you post the photo?

You may find answers here.

Hi maplea,
I think that HMCS stands for Her/His  Majesty's  Canadian Ship and thus I guess that he was transferred/lent to the Canadian Armed Forces. The CS I would think would be Canadian Service or Ship. I know that at least in the 70/80's they were a Canadian armed force sub divided into the various specialisations rather than a definite Navy, Airforce and Army as our Services are.
I hope that this has been of some assistance.

Thanks for both of the replies.  l have had another look at the record and its says he joined on the 22nd July 1919 underneath it says 5 to 7 years so the transferred to CS must mean continuous service.  Also stamped on his record
it says Traced Medal 26 Feb 1940.  Have also checked the photo again and the letters on his cap are HMCS if he was transferred or loaned to the Canadian Armed Forces that explains why the photo was taken else where.  Would love to post photo but have tried and not able to sort it out but thank again for the help both of you

Hi and thank you, I was going to ask virtually the same question.

I've downloaded a naval service record for a relative of one of my extended family, but it comes to a stop in the 1920's and he's told me service continued into the forties.

I looked at your link and got the quote below - I hope it's okay to do that.  If it get's removed, later records are not at the National Archives and on the site are two addresses to write to,  one for service before 1938, and one for service after.

What I'm wondering is, for service covering both intervals, do I have to write to both establishments or just the one when he left.

Also, does anyone know what we'd get baclk, and  what would it cost?

Are there rules about direct descent etc?

Thank you for the links and all the information posted.

Best wishes

Emms
