Hi Catha,
Might simply be family reasons. Did they come from Manchester originally? (Hope I haven't missed something there :-\)

Hi

London had around 1.7 million people living there by 1820. I estimate that 600'000 of them were not born there.

London was a honeypot for migrant workers from other parts of Britain.

Hi again,
You might be able to trace their movements if settlement certificates exist for them.
Sometimes settlement examinations can give lots of interesting information.

Prue,

I dont know if you are still looking for the marriage or whether you found it in the meantime, but there is this marriage:

John Wood, otp, bachelor married Lucy Arpin, otp, spinster, by Banns on 14th Jun 1795 at the parish church of St Mary, Newington in the county of Surrey. Witnessed by Samuel Sturyis and Mary Glover.

Hi, OneBigFamily :)

Thank you so much - yes, I did find that marriage a little while ago and while I'm not 100% sure (can we ever be, at that early date) I am as certain as I can be that they are the right couple.  I have found a reference to a Louisa Arpin born 1769, whose father Joel was a hatter, so I think that's the connection.

I appreciate you posting this for me  :D

Cheers

I note that you are researching the Killick name and looking for hatters. Does that include a John Killick, c. 1800?

Hi Clive :)

I'm looking for a couple of hatters, but no Killicks...there isn't one mentioned on this thread at all  ???

Sorry about that!

Cheers

Added:  Ah!  "OneBigFamily" has "Killick" mentioned as a name interest on their signature.  Not sure if they are interested in hatters, though ;)
