The streets of Grimsby...?
« on: Monday 12 May 08 12:57 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Can anyone help to identify a road/street in Grimsby?
My ancestor in 1861 census was in a house at "Contractor's Row". I cant identify this as a modern road, does anyone know what it is now called, or where it was? the previous road in the census was poss New Dock Street- but I am probably being very stupid, as I cant find that either!!

Thanks for the help,
Sally

Hi Sally

Contractors Row isn't there now, New Dock Street is gone as well.  Also as you would imagine New Dock Street was near Grimsby Docks and I'm sure Contractors Row was near there.   If you look at a new map of Grimsby these streets would have been where Lockhill is now, (off Cleethorpe Road)

Thank-you Fiona.
That was really helpful, I have never been to Grimsby, but plan a quick visit in the next couple of weeks- so I shall just have to enjoy a nice stroll around Lockhill and do a romantic guess at where they lived,
Thank-you again

You could go the library in Grimsby while visiting up stairs first floor reference library and ask to look at an old map of Grimsby around 1861. Also while your there find your census on micro film or on the internet there and print it off which is only 10p a sheet. The internet is free first 30mins then 50p every other 30mins. You can look at all census free through ancestry.com, just ask and they will help.

Ask to see the Grimsby Scartho road cemetery index book to see if your ancestors and there. Also Cleethorpes.

If you find your census top right look for parish i.e St.John and visit Grimsby Archives just across the road at the town Hall round the side to the left go in big door knock on inner door and ask to see the baptisms of that parish late 1850/60.Marriages.

Just a suggestion

Sally,

If you go here - http://www.old-maps.co.uk/indexmappage2.aspx

Type in the coordinates 527400 and 410500 into the two boxes, then click on ‘GO’.  Select map 4 of 11 (it’s clearer than map 1) and zoom in to Level 2 – you should see New Dock Street – According to the description of the Enumeration District (Great Grimsby Enumeration District No. 10) Contractors Row was near here.

Hope that helps,

Dean.
