Hi,

I have a Mary Connan in my family and can't find any information about her except that she married my great great grandfather James Littlejohn 5 March 1844 in Old Machar, Aberdeen. Not even sure if Connan is the right spelling.

Hi poirot[If what is written below,,,, doesn't make any sense,, then say so.. WHO IS YOUR NEXT LINE OF GRANDFATHERS How exciting, to have a reply, even though, at this point there isn't a connection.  I have found this for you though The Marriage of your James Littlejohn to Mary connon, 5/3/1844, St Machar, did happen, but there was another marriage as well, James Littlejohn to Janet Connon.

William Smith Littlejohn 16/9/1848 St Fergus
Bathia Littlejohn 6/3/1853 Kintore
Rachel Littlejohn 8/2/1855
John Connon Littlejohn 25/3/1857 New Deer
Mary Littlejohn 2/4/1859 New Deer
Isabella Littlejohn 21/3/1861 New Deer.

CERTIFICATE OF
RACHEL LITTLEJOHN born 2 Feb 1855 at Denhesie Knaven??? Parish of New Deer.
FATHER James, aged 35 yrs born New Deer, married 1844 St Fergus , Ag Labourer.
He has already 2 boys living 2girls living, and 2 boys

Thank you Audrey for your help.

Kenjo,

What you say is fascinating. I have looked at my certificates again and the spelling could well be Connon.

I have an extract of the OPR for the marriage of James Littlejohn, Carter Skene Square & Mary Connon, Steps of Gilcomston both of the parish of Old Machar. They were married 26th Feb 1844. He had three daughters & a son from his first marriage.

I also have the marriage certificates of James's son James (by his first marriage to Isobel Nicol) to his first wife Ann Arkel 1/1/1859. This gives his mother as Mary Connon deceased. He must have thought of her as his mother as his real mother Isobel died in 1838, the year after he was born.

On the certificate for his second marriage to Christina Ross 14/11/1873. his mother is given as Mary Littlejohn ms Connon.

Do you think it is a coincidence that two men called James Littlejohn married a Connon in 1844? Where did you find out about Janet Connon?

I would love to find out more.

Hi poirot ,
This is why, it is so important to confer, and work things out further.
It looks like there are 2 James Littlejohn's marrying 2 Connon girls. in the same year. :'(
I thinks that Janet and James would have had a James son, named after the father, can't find it though.

but your family really do look a totally different family.
I couldn't find anything on a mother called Mary Connon or Connan having children with a James Littlejohn,  that was with IGI and scotlandspeople.... Maybe they were registered only with the father.
Did Mary have any children after marrying James, or did she just look after James's children.
Love to hear more.

Hi Kenjo,

This is as far as I have gone. Don't know when Mary died or if she had any children with James.

I have put out a separate request for some census lookups to see if we can find them on the 1851.

Littlejohn is such an uncommon name in England that I thought researching my family in Scotland would be easy!! No such luck, it is almost as common as Smith in Aberdeen.
