Where in Glasgow is Russell St West?
« on: Saturday 10 May 08 15:07 BST (UK) »
I have a family living at 33 Russell St West in Glasgow in 1851. I can't find this on any map. I have some information that says Russell St West was later changed to Wemyss St--can't find that either. In the 1901 census, there are a lot of households at Wemyss Place, Blythswood district, St Stephen civil parish. Don't know if that is the same place.
Can anyone help me with this?
I have been using a very good 1894 map on the web
http://www.ltscotland.org.uk/scottishhistory/nls/maps/glasgow.asp

but would like to hear if anyone know of any very detailed (Zoomable and printable) older map.

The Rename Street Index at http://www.douglasbrown.co.uk/stindex.html lists 2 Russell Streets .... one in Calton and one in Govan ....

Given that Calton is in the east end of the City and Govan in the Southwest this would appear to make it more likely that your Russell Street West was the one in Govan.

As regards Wemyss Place this was a street in the central area of Glasgow and was separate from both of the aforementioned districts.

You mentioned finding Russell Street West in the 1851 census - which District was it listed under ?

Wemyss Street was in Cowcaddens just north of the current city centre area but that whole area was subject to considerable "redevelopment" in the late 1960's when the M8 motorway was built  but it is not anywhere near either Calton or Govan where the 2 Russell Streets were to be found.

That said, that part of the Cowcaddens would probably have come under Blytheswood District at some point for the earler census records.

Wemyss Place and Wemyss Street are the same place and this street once ran off of Cambridge Street in Glasgow.

Images of Wemyss Street in the 60's can be seen at The Virtual Mitchell Library Site

Russell St West was in Blythswood, so that would fit in with being near Cambridge St. I have attached a litttle picture from the 1894 map showing how Cambridge St started at Sauchiehall St and ran up to New City Road, turning along the way. There is one little unnamed street on the map-maybe that is Russell St West or Wemyss Place?  It seems to be near a tram or underground station at Cowcaddens. Does that seem the same area you are thinking of?

According to the 1893 map Russell Street and Wemyss Place were separate streets although Wemyss Place ran off of Russell Street.

The 1893 map places Russell Street north of and running parallel to Renfrew Street. it runs west from Hope Street to join Wemyss Place which ran northwards from Russell Street.

It would be this bit of the above map (near the Theatre Royal)

Thanks for that! It's an obscure little street. That family covered a lot of the map of Glasgow in their time.

This is most interesting for I have a relative who died at 37 West Russell St, in 1859 he was Affleck Kerr and for some reason I seem to think this may have been some kind of care facility. I have his death certificate and would like to compare names you may have.

Regards
Kerr, Cannon, Antrobus, Clark, McLean, McInroy, Jackson, McLeod.
All in the Greenock area from 1790 on.

I've been googling "west Russell Street" and have come across another transcribed death at 36 West Russell St in 1855.
This is a young boy who died of a malignant disease of 3 months duration. So it looks as if you are right...a care facility or hospital.
