Thomas Sharp, Clergyman.
« on: Thursday 08 May 08 21:57 BST (UK) »
Just wondering if someone has any suggestions on how I can trace Thomas Sharp, Clergyman.

Unfortunately I have no other details. I have been tracing Granville Sharp born about 1829 and ordered a marriage certificate for Granville`s second marriage on 20th April 1865 at the parish church Islington. Middlesex.

This listed Thomas Sharp, Clergyman as his Father.

I have tried to find Granville Sharp in his early years to try and find Thomas but Granville in 1841 and 1851 appears to be in either school or college :-\ :-\

I have ordered marriage certificates for other relations and sometimes the Father has been listed but has deceased if the Father is no longer alive. So I assume Thomas Sharp is still alive in 1865 :-\ :-\

Many thanks for any suggestions, help or advice

Hi Mum44,

I have previously carried out some research and according to the Family Search website Granville Sharp born 10th October 1829 and christened on 18th November 1829 Union Chapel Sim Alley Church Street Independent Woolwich Kent England.
Parents Thos & Eleanor Sharp.

Hope this helps :-\ :-\

Well, it helps a little bit;  family search IGI has baptisms for 6 other children of Thomas and Eleanor.

In 1841 an Eleanor Sharp is living in Camberwell with 3 of those named children>

HO107. p. 1051 /5 Fol. 45 Pg. 9
Living Surrey Terrace, Pack or Gap Road, Camberwell

Elenor Sharp  50  Indep
Amelia Sharp  15
Henry  Sharp  8
Eliza  Sharp   7
None born county.  (Woolwich was in Kent at that time)

The 1841 sadly doesn't show married status so there is no way of knowing from that entry whether Thomas was still alive.

However, it may be a starting point, and it also seem likely that Thomas was not CoE clergy - perhaps the Independent Chapel may have some records ?

Here are the other five:

William Francis Sharp  B. 5 Apr 1820 Baptised 17 May 1820

Thomas Calvin Sharp  B. 26 June 1822  Baptised 24 July 1822

Amelia Sharp  B. 30 Mar 1825  Baptised 27 Apr 1825

Julia Augusta Sharp  28 Mar 1827  Baptised 30 June 1827

These four were all at:
Union Chapel Sim Alley Church St. Independent, Woolwich

However - bizzareley - there is also a baptism recorded for Julia Augusta on 13 June 1827 at Peckham Hanover Independent, Camberwell

Eliza Akehurst Sharp  baptised 13 Mar 1837 Crown Street Soho Independent,  Westminster

All these are extracted records, and I can't explain the Julia double, therefore, unless it was to do with her father being a clergyman.  All the churches are Independents.

I hope this is useful

Thanks very much casalguidi for that information  ;D

Since I posted my original thread I`ve ordered and received a death certificate for Thomas Sharp. He died Sept 24th 1838 aged 46 so he would have been born around 1792.

According to Mum44`s reply his first born child was baptisted in 1820.

Just wondering if anyone has access to information that would tell me when and who he married?? We know his wife was Eleanor but would love to find out her maiden name, marriage location and date ;D

Really appreciate any help and assistance. Many thanks
