Thanks Michael,  The census printout said All Saints,  Tynemouth,  Longbenton and I know they are two totally differnet areas.  All very confusing.  Im sure he is not the guy from Cumberland but I dont know where his details can be found.  Thanks for info.  Jess

Jessy,

All Saints-Tynemouth-Longbenton... are THREE different places... although All Saints and Longbenton were neighbouring parishes, the former within Newcastle, the latter outside of Newcastle.

I hope this is not me teaching grannie to suck eggs, but I think you need to identify all the characteristics of your great grandfather and focus on these.

Is the Sowerby family living in Walker, Parish of Longbenton, on Census 1851
(page ref 2411-85-12) "yours" ?

Hiya Michael

Yes thats the family

Jessy I cant see why you are discounting this Anthony from Cumberland. I know it says on the census he was born Northumberland but the census is only as good as the information the enumerator is told

In 1851 we have (so we all know what we are talking about)

Anthony Sowerby 51 M head b Carlisle Cumberland chemical labourer
Mary Sowerby 46 b M wife b Long Town Cumberland
Thomas Sowerby 25 son U b Carlisle Cumberland iron works labourer
William Sowerby 23 son U b Carslisle Cumberland pudler
Jane Sowerby 14 dau b All Saints Northumberland
Margaret Sowerby 11 dau b All Saints Northumberland
Elizabeth Sowerby 8 dau b All Saints Northumberland
Anthony Sowerby 5 son b All Saints Northumberland

Hi Willow,

William Trotter, the lodger gave his birth place as Seaton Sluice
(which at that time lay within Hartley, one of the eight  "townships" of the Parish of Earsdon)

The name "Sluice" was added after Lord Delaval added an additional exit to the sea for the Seaton Burn, to make the harbour safer ( to safeguard the exports of the products from his glassworks)

---------------------------------------------

Can anyone see this Sowerby family on Census 1841 ?
