Difficulties with Place names and Surnames?
« on: Thursday 08 May 08 17:52 BST (UK) »
A reasonable number of posters arriving on the Irish boards have problems with place names and surnames which may have been spelt incorrectly.

Here are a couple of links for sites which may assist you ...

1. John Grenham's Surname Variants ...  www.johngrenham.com/search/surnamesearch.shtml

2. IreAtlas that was created by the late John Broderick (aka SeanRuad) www.thecore.com/seanruad

Many thanks for the book with surname variants.

I have been told I have about 200 variants!  So far I have encountered only about 6 or 7. However, there are distant ancestor siblings still to be identified, assuming they exist.

How does the Grenham link work? I put in the name and clicked on variants and nothing happened!

Hello Kooky,

What name did you try ???

I entered Bailey and Farren to check if it is still working.

Several variants showed in each case.

I put in my usual BOSHELL and DOWZARD. Probably means that there are no variants?

I also put in KANE, McNEILL, and STEWART with similar nil result.
Am I missing something vital in my computer?

Here are the Stewart results ... Steward, Stewart and Stuart

If you hit Enter instead of clicking on Variant it should show results.

Kooky
BOSHELL- Boushel, Boushell, Bushel, Bushell, Bussell
DOWZARD- none listed

Had no problem with the site as such but put in one of my surnames and only 1 other variant came up- not 5 or 6 of the more common ones- which I thought was strange.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
